Another very busy week of district competition for Nolan County high school athletes resumes Monday, when the Sweetwater girls golf team plays the final leg of its 5-3A tournament at Brownwood. Blackwell’s golf teams also wrap up their tournament Monday as they play in Baird.
The Sweetwater boys golf team goes to Wylie to play the third and final leg of its 5-3A tournament Tuesday. Both Sweetwater teams are in second place and need a top-two finish to advance to regional tournaments.
ABILENE — After scor-ing a season-high 15 runs in a key win at Big Spring three days earlier, Sweet-water again brought out the big lumber on Friday when it traveled to Wylie for the last of four straight road games in District 5-3A softball play.
And after a 10-6 win, the Lady Mustangs are on the verge of making history as just the second team to advance to postseason play since Sweetwater began playing UIL softball.
ABILENE — For four in-nings of Friday’s rematch, a Sweetwater team that had lost 16-1 at home to Wylie in its District 5-3A opener stood toe-to-toe with the first-place Bulldogs.
The Mustangs even held a brief 4-1 lead after pushing across three runs in their half of the fourth inning before Wylie tied it by scor-ing three runs as well.
Unfortunately, the scor-ing pretty much ended there for Sweetwater, while Wylie was just getting started. The Bulldogs took their first lead, 8-4, with a four-run fifth and went on to a 10-5 win over the Mustangs.
