BROWNWOOD — After hitting its low point of the season in a district-opening 16-1 home loss to Wylie on March 20, the Sweetwater baseball team is suddenly hitting its stride — and the Mustangs are hitting the ball pretty darn well, too.
Wednesday’s convincing 14-8 victory at Brownwood certainly drove home the last point. Sweetwater belted 15 hits off three pitchers while handing the three-time defending district champion Lions their first defeat in 5-3A play. The win leaves both squads at 1-1 in district and tied for second place behind Wylie (3-0), a 9-7 winner over Big Spring on Wednesday.
BROWNWOOD — After getting eight days off following its come-from-behind 8-6 win over Wylie here on March 20, Sweetwater’s softball team came out blazing with three early runs at Brownwood and a 3-0 lead after 1 1/2 innings Wednesday. A double by Claire Williams began the rally, and Kendra Crosson was hit by a pitch before Kelsi Crosson doubled both of them home. After a strikeout, Maty Montgomery then reached on an error to score courtesy runner Angela Garza and give Sweetwater a 3-0 advantage over the Lady Lions and their ace pitcher, Sydney Laws.
Roscoe narrowly missed getting a clean sweep of the team titles Saturday in varsity track competition at Rotan’s Double Moun-tain Relays. Roscoe had 145 points to win the boys division, while the Roscoe girls scored 99 points to finish just one behind first-place Roby’s 100.
Highland and Blackwell’s boys track athletes had sev-eral top finishes at Jayton’s Rolling Plains Relays this past week. Girls results were not available at press time today.
