If Brownwood thought that its last district game at Mustang Gym for at least the next two years would be easy, Sweetwater had them thinking otherwise by game’s end Tuesday.
Unfortunately, close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. As a result, the playoff-bound Lions (5-1) left with a 57-48 win that kept them in contention for a share of the District 5-3A title. But it took clutch free throw shooting at the end for Brownwood to finally hold off Sweetwater (1-6), which twice got within four points until the Lions hit 7-0f-8 from the line in the final 1:07 to seal the win.
Brownwood showed again here Tuesday why it is the No. 6-ranked team in Class 3A girls basketball.
Sweetwater scored the first basket on a shot by Candice Hernandez just 16 seconds into the game. But things went downhill quickly from there for the homestanding Lady Mustangs as the Lady Lions came back to beat Sweetwater, 70-29, in the teams’ season finale.
The Roscoe girls basket-ball team defeated Stamford, 33-31, in its regular season finale on Tuesday. But the Plowgirls (5-5, 16-14) didn’t get the help they needed to have a shot at the third and final playoff spot in District 9-A, Division I.
Haskell (6-4) claimed the No. 3 berth Tuesday by beating Rotan. Hamlin (9-1) and Munday (8-2) took the top two spots in the district.
Sweetwater won three of its four sub-varsity games against Brownwood here on Tuesday. The JV boys won 43-28, the JV girls prevailed 53-42 in their game and the freshman boys defeated Brownwood 38-15. The freshman girls lost to Brownwood in their contest, 34-31.
The JV boys, who are now 16-10 overall and 3-4 in district, were led by Trey Taylor with 11 points. Deandre Gatson had 10, Quentin Wetsel eight, Brandon Howell seven, Mike McCoy five and Mar-quees Jenkins two.
