SPPA elects new board members

The Sweetwater Police Patrol Association recently elected new board members. They are President, Sam Cunningham; Vice-President, Lance Richburg; Secretary, Danny Heine; and Treasurer, Melinda Moncada.

February is an excellent time to focus on refreshing families. The celebration of Valentine’s Day creates a natural awareness of love and draws couples to evaluate how they can strengthen their relationship. To that end, Feb. 7-14 has been declared National Marriage Week. The goal of National Marriage Week is to elevate attention on the need to strengthen marriages, initiate new efforts to reduce the divorce rate and connect couples with the tools available to build stronger marriages.

Mustangs set football schedule for 2012 season

After the big news of Thursday's University Interscholastic League realignment which has placed Sweetwater in District 4-3A for the next two years, Sweetwater head football coach Craig Slaughter has announced a tentative 2012 football schedule which will include some familiar and not-so-familar rivals in non-district play.

Veterans Discovery Day held at TSTC

The Veterans Discovery Day was held at the Sweetwater TSTC (Texas State Technical College) campus on Friday, Jan. 27, 2012.
All military personnel — active duty, National Guard, reserve forces, separated, discharged or retired —- and their families were invited to the event. According to event coordinator Scott Davis, the Discovery Day held a two-fold purpose.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 51 calls for service, issued two citation and made no arrests on Feb. 1, 2012.

The SPD received 11, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon — 600 block of Lamar.
• Criminal mischief — 500 block of Newman.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had no calls for service, served no civil papers and made no arrests on Feb. 1, 2012.
Calls for service:
• Accident involving vehicle — 1500 block of 273 Maryneal, TX.
• Medical emergency — I-20 west bound.
• Grass fire — CR 256.

Funeral services for G.C. Hoover, Jr., 85, of Fisher County, Texas, are pending with McCoy Funeral Home.
Hoover died Friday, Jan. 3, 2012, at his home.

Realignment may not offer much help

The University Interscho-lastic League realignment finally arrived on Thursday and as usual, there were some surprises — both good and bad — for our county’s four high schools.
Given Sweetwater’s lack of athletic success recently, the general hope was that the UIL would put the Mustangs and Lady Mustangs in a more favor-able district than the current one (5-3A) with Wylie, Brownwood, Big Spring and Snyder, all with much higher enrollments and with the exception of Big Spring, a big winning tradition.

Heart luncheon this Friday

The annual Go Red for Women luncheon will be held on Friday, Feb. 3, 2012 at the Sweetwater TSTC (Texas State Technical College) campus.
Tickets for the luncheon are $10 per person. Businesses can sponsor a table for $80, which will include six tickets and promotional benefits with the business's logo at the table.

Nemir to play at HSU

Sam Nemir (seated at table), a senior at Sweetwater High School, has committed to play college football at Hardin-Simmons University. A ceremony was held to announce Nemir’s decision Wednesday morning at the high school library. Among those who attended were members of Nemir’s family. They included brothers Nick (far left) and Max as well as mother Marina and father Gordon. Nick, a junior, and Sam played together on the 2011 varsity football team at SHS with both winning all-district and all-Big Country recognition.
