Sweetwater loses Brownwood, gains Monahans and G'wood

Sweetwater's district for the next two years will be slightly bigger and not necessarily any easier.
The University Interscholastic League announced its realignment today, and Sweetwater's new district (4-3A) will still include Wylie, Big Spring and Snyder from the current five-team District 5-3A, plus newcomers Monahans and Midland Greenwood to make a six-team district. Brownwood, which is the other school currently in District 5-3A, moves to District 8-3A to face a whole new set of opponents, none of them located near Sweetwater or Abilene.

TNB hosts Chamber Coffee

Texas National Bank hosted this month’s Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce coffee event. Employees and Chamber members mingled over coffee and treats on Wednesday morning, Feb. 1, 2012.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 49 calls for service, issued two citation and made one arrest on Jan. 31, 2012.

The SPD received 55, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Disorderly conduct — 300 block of Lamar.
• Theft — 200 block of E .Fourth.
• Theft — 200 block of W. Alabama.

Arrested by SPD:
• Female juvenile, 10 — False report to peace officer.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had eight calls for service, served two civil papers and made no arrests on Jan. 31, 2012.
Calls for service:
• Stray livestock — CR 216/CR 228.
• Burglary — CR 196.

The Sweetwater boys had a second-place team finish Saturday when it competed at a powerlifting meet held at Abilene High School.

Plowboys and Hornets lose

Roscoe and Highland suffered losses in area boys high school basketball action Tuesday. Roscoe lost to Rotan, 50-42, in its game as the Plowboys fell to 1-6 in District 9-A, Division I, while Highland fell to Trent 46-45 in the teams’ District 11-A, Division II contest.
Ron Covington scored 23 points for Highland, but no other player was able to reach double figures as the Hornets fell to 5-19 overall and 2-7 in district.

First trash picking event a success

Several teams helped in the First Annual Sweetwater Trash Pickers event held Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012. The teams cleaned up Alabama Street from the Interstate 20 exit to Newman Street. About 45 people showed up to the event and picked up everything from golf balls, dirty diapers, tools, beer bottles, Styrofoam cups and straws, Lotto tickets and much more.
"It was amazing how much ground we covered in two hours," said event organizer Russ Petty. "It was great to see how many people care about our little corner of the world."

Four dogs available for adoption

Sweetwater Animal Control currently has five dogs available for adoption.
One of the adoptable pets is a female terrier mix. Also available are a female collie mix, a male chihuahua and a male collie mix.
According to Sweetwater's animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.
The pets are required to have their vaccination before they leave to their new homes.

AARP, IRS to offer free income tax return preparation

AARP and IRS will sponsor as a public service free income tax return preparation, including e-file at four locations this year.
• Fisher County Courthouse in Roby on Feb. 2, March 1 and April 5 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• County-City Library Community Room in Sweetwater, located at 206 Elm Street on Feb. 13, March 12 and April 9 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• SNAP in Sweetwater is having some repairs done so location will be changed.
• Senior Citizen Center on Avenue M in Snyder on Feb. 8, March 7 and April 11 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
