The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 28 calls for service, issued one citation and made no arrests on Jan. 30, 2012.

The SPD received 55, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Family violence assault — 700 block of Silas.
The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had four calls for service, served one civil paper and made two arrests on Jan. 30, 2012.

Arrested by NCSO:
• Jonathan Ray Vasquez, 22, of Sweetwater — Judgment.
• Stetson Scott Shirley, 21, of Sweetwater — Warrants/motion to revoke probation and duty on striking unattended vehicle.

Silverio A. Alcala

Silverio A. Alcala, age 88, of Sweetwater, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012 at Nolan Nursing and Rehab.
A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 3, 2012 at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel recited by Pauline Gauna and Connie Palacios.
Holy Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Rev. Charles Okonkwo officiating. Burial will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery with the Nolan County Honor Guard. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

Dolores Wynell Winslett

Funeral services for Dolores Wynell Winslett, 77, of Sweetwater, will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 3, 2012, at Broadway Baptist Church with Rev. Chris Stephens officiating. Interment will follow at 3 p.m. at Blake Cemetery in Brown County, under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home of Sweetwater.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012, at McCoy Funeral Home.
Winslett died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2012, at Sweetwater Healthcare Center.

SW teams get bum Steer

BIG SPRING — Desper-ately needing a win to have any realistic hopes of getting to the playoffs, visiting Sweetwater was down by just four points (26-22) against Big Spring after starting out the third quarter of Tuesday’s District 5-3A game with a 5-0 run.
But Big Spring answered that surge, which included a 3-pointer by Kendra Cros-son followed by Crosson’s steal and layup, with a resounding run of its own. The Lady Steers (3-3) scored the next 23 points to put the game out of reach and claim a 53-31 victory.

Boys can’t sustain early momentum

BIG SPRING — There were a lot of positive signs for Sweetwater on Tuesday, even though the Mustangs fell to Big Spring 48-37 and saw their playoff chances take a major hit.
The Mustangs held an opponent to under 50 points for the second consecutive game, while allowing just three in the opening quarter. And while the Mustangs struggled again offensively, they trailed by just two, 19-17, at halftime and later cut a 16-point deficit at the start of the fourth quarter to just nine (45-36) with 2:47 left in the game.

Two area girls teams get wins

The Highland girls basketball team, already assured of the playoffs, kept up its winning ways on Tuesday while Roscoe’s girls also got a big victory to keep their postseason chances alive.
Nine players scored as Highland routed Trent, 61-26, to improve to 21-7 overall and 9-2 in District 11-A, Division II.
Kara Hughey scored 12 points and Beth Richburg 11 for the Lady Hornets, while Sierra Allen scored nine points, Lora Stewart eight, Madison Moseley, Morgan Monroe and Jes-sica McCain five, Megan Thompson four and Kay-lee Martin two.

EQIP ranking period ends Friday, Feb. 3

USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) District Conservationist Mandi M. Ligon reminds agriculture producers that the ranking period cut-off date for the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) is Feb. 3, 2012. Producers interested in EQIP should submit applications to the Nolan County NRCS office by the deadline so their applications can be considered during the first ranking period of 2012.

Texas National Bank to host Chamber Coffee

Texas National Bank will host the monthly Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce Coffee and celebrate Texas Independence Day at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012, in the bank's lobby at 400 East Broadway.
Texas National Bank opened for business on Monday, May 8, 1995, immediately following its acquisition of the Sweetwater Branch of Hamlin National Bank, which had been operating in Sweetwater since January of 1990. In 1997 the bank acquired the local branch of Bluebonnet Savings from State National Bank.
