This past week was by far the best one for both of Sweetwater High School’s varsity basketball teams since district play began.
The teams each got their initial 5-3A win by defeating Snyder on Tuesday, then got the district’s bye Friday.
Another victory today at Big Spring would not only continue the recent success but also vault the Mustangs (1-3) and Lady Mustangs (1-4) into a third-place tie with Big Spring (whose teams are 2-2 and 2-3). The girls and boys tip off at 6 and 7:30 p.m., respective-ly, with JV and freshman games also on tap.
The Sweetwater High School JV boys basketball team will resume play at Big Spring at 4:30 p.m. today. The team is 15-8 overall and 2-2 in district. Caring for an elderly or ill relative is not an easy task and can sometimes take a considerable toll on the caregiver’s physical and emotional health. With this in mind, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) and the Area Agency on Aging are joining together to provide the community with a special program on Feb. 8. Valuable information will be shared during this free event on resources and supports available for caregivers.
Sweetwater firefighters Brad Payne and Jarrett Knowles are shown hosing down items from a home destroyed by a dryer fire the previous night around 11 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 27, 2012, on Lou Street in Sweetwater. The family of five living in the home lost everything to the blaze, but all made it out safely.
When the City Commission presented the deteriorating condition and temporary closing of the local SNAP (Senior Nutrition Activities Program) building for reconstruction this January, a local church stepped up to fill the void left by the facilities.
Highland Heights United Methodist Church has opened its doors for SNAP attendees to use as a temporary meeting location. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays, folks can bring their own lunch or their purchased meal from SNAP — the kitchen remains open during this time — and dine in the church's fellowship hall.

Every 10 years, Texas requires that marks and brands be re-registered in the county or counties in which you operate.Â
The next re-registration period began Aug. 31, 2011, and concludes Feb. 29, 2012. After the conclusion date, all marks and brands that have not been re-registered are automatically available for registration by another party.Â
The cost of registering brands in Nolan County is $16 per location. Payment may be made by cash, check or credit/debit card.
Stella Mae Smith was born Sept. 20, 1921, in White Flat Community, Texas. She passed away Jan. 29, 2012 at Metroplex Hospital in Killeen, Texas. She married Cleave A. Smith of the Palava Community, Texas on Dec. 2, 1939.
Officials with the Sweetwater Police Department say area residents should remain vigilant as they investigate reports of a possible phone scam where callers are identifying themselves as payday loan representatives, asking for payments on loans taken out by those they are calling. According to Sweetwater Police Officer Armando Renteria, a local resident received a call in which a person — with a foreign accent — claimed to be collecting for a payday loan company that she had a loan with, wanting immediate payment on the loan.
