After compiling just a 5-11 record prior to the holiday break, the Sweetwater boys basketball team is starting to pile up some victories.
The Mustangs began 2012 with a dominating 64-39 win at home over Roby on Tuesday, their fourth win the past five games.
The most dominating stretch came near the start of the contest. Sweetwater outscored the Lions 19-3 in the final five minutes of the first quarter to open a 23-7 advantage, and held leads of between 12 and 28 points the rest of the way.
The Sweetwater girls’ up-and-down basketball season is back on the upswing, and it couldn’t come at a better time. A 55-25 blowout win against Roby here Tuesday was the eighth in the past 11 games as the Lady Mus-tangs ended the non-dis-trict portion of their sched-ule with a 14-11 record.
“I think we’ve stepped our game up. Our last three games have been the best games of our season,” said Sweetwater head coach Candice Wyatt, whose team began 2012 with a bang after finishing second at the Breckenridge tournament last week, losing the title game to Tolar by one point.
Highland’s teams swept a district doubleheader from Loraine and Roscoe’s girls also won in their final district tuneup on Tuesday.
Highland’s state-ranked girls improved to 15-6 overall, and are 3-1 in District 11-A, Division II after the Lady Hornets’ 63-45 win over Loraine.

A Sweetwater Middle School (SMS) sixth grader recently won a contest sponsored by the Grace Museum of Abilene.
SMS sixth grade history teacher Shaunna Cleckler presented the contest--naming the brahma bull mascot of the Grace's upcoming Children and Art Literacy Festival (CALF)--to her students. Among the student entries, the name "Mini Moo" from sixth grader Reese Dahl was chosen.
The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce will hold its monthly Chamber Coffee at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 4 at Doris' Sweet Shop, located at 1404 Hailey.
The business is owned by Doris Johnson, who founded the bakery in 1988. She and Horace Johnson operate the bakery, while Brenda Kamer is the on-site manager. Six workers are employed at Doris' Sweet Shop.

Within the last decade wind turbines have sprung up through most of the wide stretches of landscape in our area.
Government tax credits and subsidies, have largely contributed to this new age renewable energy boom, however an expiration for a certain tax credit could abruptly end the latest surge.
The wind energy impact on the Big Country is evident.
"Truck drivers, welders, steel workers... people all across Texas in particular," explained Sweetwater Mayor and Executive Director of the Texas Wind Energy Clearing House, Greg Wortham.
Funeral services for Donna Jean Dowty, 80, of Colorado City, will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 6, 2012, at First Assembly of God Church in Colorado City with Rev. Mike Foster officiating. Interment will follow at Colorado City Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012, at First Assembly of God Church in Colorado City.
Dowty died Monday, Jan. 2, 2012, at Mitchell County Hospital.
John C. Wilkinson, 73, of Sweetwater, Texas, passed away on Jan. 1, 2012, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012, at McCoy Chapel of Memories under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home. Rev. Keith Clifton and Rev. Jerry Payne will be officiating. A family visitation will be held Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012, from 7-8:30 p.m.
Funeral services for Joe Garcia, 65, of Spring Texas, formerly of Sweetwater, will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6, 2012, at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Military Graveside Rites at Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home. Father Dennis Bosley will officiate.
A wake will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012 at McCoy Funeral Home in Sweetwater.
Garcia died Saturday, Dec. 31, 2011, in Houston, Texas.
