UPDATE: DPS releases details on cross-country chase

UPDATE: About mid afternoon, law enforcement officers received a tip from local citizens in Colorado City that three men had entered a building there. Officers have the building surrounded. The neighborhood has been evacuated and travelers are not allowed into the area as a safety precaution. It is believed the three males from this morning’s pursuit are the three that have barricaded themselves in the building.

Officers searching for men after chase, vehicle found abandoned in Nolan County

Law enforcement officers are looking for three men in the western part of the Big Country.
The search began early Monday morning when a Department of Public Safety officer tried to stop a driver for a traffic violation.
The driver of the sport utility vehicle refused to stop and led the officers on a chase that covered parts of Howard, Mitchell and Nolan Counties.
The three men in the car allegedly shot at the pursuing state trooper and that brought in more officers.
The men reportedly abandoned the SUV and got in another vehicle.

Roscoe parishioners want Mass back at their church

During a regular committee meeting on Sunday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, several members of St. Albert Mission in Roscoe came into the meeting with signs and questions about their church's closure.
Several Scriptures in Spanish were written on the signs. Others read, "Reopen Saint Albert's" and "Our kids care, too." Several children also came in and also held signs. One child held a sign that read, "You shall not steal our happiness = St. Albert's Church."

MLK holiday commemorated

Monday will mark the twenty-seventh observation of a holiday honoring a man who took steps to make a positive imprint in society while doing so in a calm and non-violent manner.
Martin Luther King, Jr.--also known more succinctly as MLK--was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia to a pastor and school teacher and was the middle child of three. Considered a gifted student, King attended a segregated public school, only to follow in the footsteps of his father and headed to Morehouse College as a fifteen-year-old.

Healthy living begins with commitments made today

As we are well into January, many people who have set new goals and resolutions for the New Year have already broken one or many of them. If you have put off making health and exercise changes to your lifestyle for 2013, it is never too late to recommit.
“Each year, three of the top five resolutions made by American adults consist of health- and exercise-related goals,” said Wes Stafford, director of the cardiac rehabilitation program at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH). “People understand the need, but often fall short of motivation.”

SHS powerlifting

Sweetwater’s girls scored 24 points to win the team title at the season-opening powerlifting meet Thursday in Big Spring, beating out Colorado City (23 points) and Big Spring (22).
The Sweetwater boys also went to Big Spring and fin-ished with 22 points for fourth place. Lake View won the division with 45 points.
The only weight class winner for the Sweetwater girls was Nay Gonzales, who lifted a total of 560 pounds in the 220-pound class.
