Prepping in advance for watch parties and tailgating means you don't have to worry about last-minute details. And while standard watch party fare may be enticing, game day snacking guilt can set in once the day is over. Avoid snacking guilt by serving up flavorful, better-for-you dishes that will still please the party palates of your fellow fans.

High flu activity means residents should seek treatment, get vaccinated

With reports of flu widespread across Texas, state health officials urge people to get a flu shot now and take other steps to protect themselves from the flu and its possible complications.
“Texas, like much of the country, saw an early start to the flu season and continues to experience a high level of flu and flu-like illness,” said DSHS Commissioner Dr. David Lakey. “The best thing people can do to protect themselves is to get a dose of flu vaccine now. There is plenty of vaccine available.”

Jump into the fun

The Sweetwater Intermediate School Jump Rope Team has been performing at several events in the past few weeks including at last night's Varsity girl's basketball game. Members of the team are shown performing some of their stunts at the half-time show last night.
The team will perform at Howard College on Thursday, Abilene Christian University on Tuesday, Western Texas College on Thursday, Jan. 31, and at the San Antonio Spurs game on Saturday, Feb. 2.

Suspects in standoff identified

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), assisted by local law enforcement agencies, arrested three men early Tuesday morning in Colorado City after a nearly 10-hour standoff. The men are accused of being involved in an incident Monday where shots were fired at a Texas Highway Patrol trooper during a high-speed pursuit.

Grand Jury indicts seven

A Nolan County Grand Jury indicted seven people this past week. Two of those indictments were sealed. The following cases were true-billed:
Satori Denise Bailey was indicted for possession of marijuana, a state jail felony. Court documents state that Bailey knowingly possessed more than four ounces, but less than five pounds of marijuana on Oct. 9, 2012. Bailey's bond was set at $5,000.

RPMH ads to begin airing on local TV

Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital will be extending their outreach in a new manner, as shown during the Monday night meeting of the Nolan County Hospital District board of directors.
Opening the meeting was the airing of the three, thirty-second ads that will begin airing on the local cable channel. The ads were discussed during a previous meeting, in which they promote the care and services offered at the local hospital.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 29 calls for service, issued no citations and made no arrests on Jan. 21, 2013.

The SPD received 16, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Burglary of a building — 400 block of E. Avenue A.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 21 calls for service, served four civil papers and made nine arrests from Jan. 18-21, 2013.

Arrested by NCSO:
• Louis Diaz, Jr., 55, of Sweetwater — Tarrant County warrant/possession of a controlled substance.

B.J. (Bill) Lawhon

B.J. (Bill) Lawhon, age 84, of Sweetwater, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at Abilene Regional Medical Center.
Masonic graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at Garden of Memories with the Sweetwater Masonic Lodge #571 A.F. and A.M. officiating. Burial will follow. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

William Hollis Robison

William Hollis Robison, age 82, of Salado, Texas, passed away peacefully on Jan. 20, 2013. He was born on Sept. 9, 1930, to William and Laura Mae Robison in the small town of Shallowater, Texas. After several moves in his childhood, the family made Sweetwater, Texas their home. He attended Sweetwater High School and served as Senior Class President in 1948. From there, he attended McMurray College in Abilene where he worked as a soda jerk at the local drug store.

Lady Steers nip S’water in overtime

To say Sweetwater and Big Spring have been even-ly matched district rivals this season might qualify as an understatement.
The Lady Mustangs had to survive two last-second Big Spring shot attempts to pull out a 35-33 victory at Big Spring in the teams’ district 0pener Jan. 4.
But on Tuesday, it was the Lady Steers turn to deal some heartache as they held on for a 41-40 overtime win at Mustang Gym, leaving both teams 3-3 and tied for third in District 4-3A with four games left.
