"If he had a toothache with a tooth that size, he probably just laid down and died."
This was one of several comments about the prehistoric animal tusks uncovered in May 1967 on Vergil Redden's land north of the Nolan County Coliseum, as dirt contractors were digging out an area near the stock pond so the pond could be drained.
Workers uncovered one tusk that crumbled easily when touched. Redden decided to wait for more expert help before doing more digging.
The Nolan County Hospital District Board of Directors met on Monday night at the Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH), in which they approved a policy regarding the new condition alert wrist bands.
According to state requirements, hospitals must have three different color-coded wristbands that alert medical staff on a patient's allergies, fall risk and their desire to not be resuscitated. The hospital will also be adding two additional bracelets that will alert medical staff on latex allergies and restricted extremities.
Region 14 Education Service Center Head Start announces that its Annual Report to the Public for 2011-2012 is available for viewing. This report is part of the federal standards for providing an annual report each year for school districts, parents, community members and any other interested agencies.
This report includes data on children served, curriculum, funding information, results from the 2009 Federal review and governance.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 54 calls for service, issued five citations and made two arrests on Jan. 22, 2013.
The SPD received 26, 911 calls.

Olney â Charlotee Anne Barton, age 66, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at Hamilton Hospital in Olney, Texas. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at the Faith Center in Graham, Texas with Ricky Ellis of Graham, Texas officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Lunn Funeral Home of Olney.
Linda Joyce Claxton Moody, 66, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, at First Baptist Church, 213 East Third Street in Sweetwater. Visitation for family and friends will be from 1 p.m. until service time. Burial will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery.

Signups for Sweetwa-ter Little League Base-ball will be held starting this Friday, Jan. 25 in the Sweetwater Middle School choir room. This will be for players in the Minor League (ages 9-10) and Major League (ages 11-12).
All returning and new players need to bring a copy of their birth certi-ficate and three proofs of their residence for the league to keep. The Sweetwater JV girls are still unbeaten after top-ping Big Spring, 32-22, here Tuesday to improve to 20-0 this season.
Shaneese Brown had 10 points, Cierra Knox nine and Morgan Whitley eight in Tuesdayâs win for Sweet-water, also 6-0 in district. The Lady Mustangs led 6-1, 15-5 and 20-12 at the breaks. Jaya Atkins and Nisha Williams had two and Abby McPherson one.
The freshman girls also won, 25-21, to go 4-2 in district play while improving their season mark to 11-6.
The Sweetwater Middle School seventh and eighth grade Red boys basketball teams won three of four games when they served as host teams for a one-day tournament Saturday.
Merkel and Wall provided the opposition for the event held at the Sweetwater Middle School gym.
The seventh grade Red team won both of its games, defeating Merkel 43-24 and Wall 49-27, and the eighth grade Red boys also beat Wall 30-13 following a 23-21 loss to Merkel.
