Funeral services for Vivian Ann Rice, 89, of Sweetwater, will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at Sweetwater Cemetery with Chaplain Lynn Robertson officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Rice died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, at Nolan Nursing and Rehab.
The Robotics Team for Sweetwater Intermediate School, Senior Soldiers,Â will be traveling to Dallas on Saturday, Jan. 12,Â for theÂ First Lego League Regional Robotics Championship Tournament. The team qualified on Dec. 8, in Ft. Worth.

This team advanced while receiving two advance placements in robot design and core values.
Sweetwater Animal Control currently has two dogs available for adoption.
Available for adoption is a male chihuahua mix and a male mixed breed dog. According to Sweetwaterâ€™s animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.
The pets are required to have their vaccination before they leave to their new homes.
Trinity Baptist Church is resuming one of their ministries, as the DivorceCare sessions will begin this Thursday evening, January 10. The class will be held at the church, located on the corner of Hailey and Santa Fe, in the "Encouragers" Sunday School classroom.
DivorceCare is a weekly support group and seminar where divorced or separated individuals can meet with and learn from people who are experiencing similar situations in life. The class will be held each week from 6 to 7:30 p.m. for thirteen weeks, with a week off during Spring Break.
Two people entered guilty pleas to Judge Glen Harrison during 32nd Judicial District Court proceedings on Monday, Jan. 7.
Sweetwater High School students were given the opportunity on Monday morning, January 7 to learn about the importance of higher education and more about Texas Tech University during an assembly featuring the interim president of the campus, Dr. Lawrence Schovanec.
Dr. Schovanec highlighted two points in his speech: for students to consider the advantages of a college education as well as the possibility of attending the Lubbock school.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 121 calls for service, issued 15 citations and made five arrests from Jan. 4-6, 2013.

Funeral services for Mr. Douglas Leon Horn, 87, of Springhill, Louisiana, formerly of Jefferson, were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at the Capt. Wm. Perry Chapel of Haggard Funeral Home in Jefferson, Texas with Rev. Allison Byerley officiating. Interment will follow in Oakwood Memorial Park. Visitation was from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 28, 2012 at Haggard Funeral Home.
Our beloved David Valdez was taken home to be with our heavenly father on January 4, 2013 at the age of 57 years old. He passed away at Hereford Regional Medical Center with his family at his bedside. David was born December 18, 1955 in Lebanon, Indiana to Manuel and Maria Valdez. He married the love of his life and best friend Margarita (Margie) Galvan Valdez on May 15, 1977 in Loraine, Texas. They moved to Hereford from Abilene in 2011.
Sweetwaterâ€™s Lady Mustangs resume play with an early district showdown at home against Greenwood at 7:30 today in the main high school gym after winning their opener at Big Spring. The freshman girls will play at 5 p.m. and the Junior Varsity girls will play at 6:30 p.m., both games at Sweetwater Middle School.
Sweetwater and Greenwood are two of three 1-0 teams in District 4-3A along with Wylie, which plays at Monahans today.
