Roscoe’s JV tops C-Plains

Roscoe’s junior varsity shut out Cross Plains, 38-0, on Thursday.
If that sounds familiar, Roscoe won by the same score over Cross Plains a week earlier in Cross Plains before playing Thursday on Roscoe’s field.

Roscoe teams stay unbeaten

Roscoe’s two junior high teams are 3-0 after beating Cross Plains on Thursday.
The eighth grade Plow-boys won 18-6.
Francisco Garcia had a hand in all three scores for Roscoe, as he had TD runs of 5 and 15 yards as well as a 22-yard scoring pass to Clemente Aguayo.
Roscoe’s seventh grade team got three TD runs by Jose Ortega and one from Tagen Adkins as they won their game 26-0.
Ortega scored on runs of 26, 54 and 12 yards, while Adkins had a 12-yard TD run for the Plowboys and Ortega had a pair of two-point conversions as well.

Fall fun at Nolan Nursing

Residents and staff had a fun day with fall hats.
A prize for the best hat went to Gayle Batchelor (shown) for her fall foliage hat. Gayle made her hat in arts in a featured craft activity.
Employee winner for best hat went to Linda Freeman, CDM. Many family members also supported their love ones with a hat.

Positive changes being made to Relay For Life

This coming Saturday, Oct. 12, the 2013 Relay for Life will be held at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex.
At the annual event, a luminaria ceremony is held, which honors those who have battled cancer. This year's ceremony will see some changes, as a Powerpoint presentation will be used to honor these individuals.
Instead of reading the names aloud, the presentation will allow family members to honor their loved one by submitting a photo. All photos must be submitted by this Wednesday, October 9 to cindy-hamlin@hotmail.com.

Woman’s Forum planning for Pumpkins on the Porch

The Pioneer City County Museum continues to be a vital part of the community. With community support, the Museum hopes to use the money raised to continue their community projects and programs. This spring the Museum hosted Dr. Shelley Wachsmann's "The Sea of Galilee Boat" lecture to a fantastic turnout and hope to continue bringing more people and programs that the community will enjoy. The museum is compiling and republishing histories of Sweetwater by prominent citizens, such as Judge R. C. Crane and Carlos X. Alvarado.

Local FFA student awarded Permian Basin Expo Fair and Exposition scholarship

Morgan Whitley, Sweetwater High School senior, was recently awarded a $1,500 scholarship from the Permian Basin Fair.
The scholarship recognizes her FFA and academic achievements. Competing with a heavyweight cross gilt, she also received first place in her class.
Whitley is the daughter of Terri and Russ Petty and plans to attend Angelo State University this fall.

Pleas entered in District Court

Several have entered pleas during 32nd Judicial District Court proceedings this week in Nolan County.
John Franklin Hickmon was sentenced to 10 years confinement in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, probated for four years for pleading guilty to aggravated assault with serious bodily injury, a second degree felony. Court documents state that Hickmon stabbed the victim in the hand and knee with a knife on Feb. 2, 2013. Hickmon was also ordered to pay a $3,500 fine, $348 in court costs and $500 in attorney's fees and will have to serve 160 hours of community service.

Leola Maxine Weburg

Seminole — Leola Maxine Weburg, 91, of Seminole passed away Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013 in Seminole. She was born July 27, 1922 in Salina, Kan. to Norton and Elisabeth Weburg. Leola was employed as a Lab Technician for many years in Salina, Kan. She moved from Salina, Kan. to Sweetwater in 1984 to be near her sister and in 2010 she moved to Seminole, Texas. Leola enjoyed her family, traveling, golf and photography.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Marjorie Dahl in 2010 and Natnalie O’Neal.

Paula (DeLoera) Muñoz

Paula Muñoz, 92, left this earth for her Heavenly Home on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013 in Sweetwater surrounded by her family.
Holy Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 7, 2013 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Father Charles Okonkwo will officiate. Interment will follow at the Loraine Cemetery directed by McCoy Funeral Home.
A Rosary was said at McCoy Chapel of Memories on Sunday evening, Oct. 6, at 7 p.m.
