USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) District Conservationist Mandi Ligon announces applications for funding opportunities with the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) and Wildlife Habitat Incentive Program (WHIP) are currently being accepted at the NRCS offices located at 103 West Florida.
The Sweetwater Goodfellows are currently seeking businesses, organizations or individuals interested in setting up a table at the annual Goodfellows Christmas party with Santa.
A total of 10 tables will be set up at the hour-long event and those in charge of the table are asked to bring something for the children to enjoy. "In the past we have had a table with balloons, one with snacks. It does not have to be anything big, just something to give to the children attending the party," says Goodfellows President Billy Johnston. "Some ideas may include coloring books or Santa hats."
Several Sweetwater High School (SHS) and Sweetwater Middle School (SMS) students made the TMEA (Texas Music Educators' Association) South Zone Honor Choir and performed in a concert on Saturday, Nov. 2 in Clyde. Students from SMS include Emma Foust, Megan Dean, Anastasia White, Max Rodriguez, Lauren Browning, Aubrey Delacruz and Taiden Smith, along with SHS student Martin Morini.
The Sweetwater Fire Department was recently awarded with a grant from Georgia-Pacific.
"Inspired by the efforts of our nation's firefighters â€” including the many Georgia-Pacific employees serving their communities as volunteer firefighters â€” we have tapped into the inspirational history of firefighting to create the Georgia-Pacific Bucket Brigadeâ„¢," said Georgia-Pacific officials.
Founded in 2006, Georgia-Pacific Bucket Brigadeâ„¢ provides support which includes:

Funeral services for Rose Louise Franklin, 65, of Sweetwater, will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013, at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Rev. Robert Carey, Sr. officiating. Interment will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Franklin died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013 at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.
She was born Jan. 29, 1948, in Sweetwater. She married Ruben L. Franklin in 1993, in Sweetwater.
Rose lived in Sweetwater most of her life and was a homemaker. She attended Mt. Rose Baptist Church in Sweetwater.
ROTAN â€“ Ricardo "Ricky" Ortega, 48, passed away Sunday, Nov. 17, 2013, in Rotan.
A Rosary will be prayed Monday, Nov. 18, 2013 at 6 p.m. at Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rotan, with burial following at Belvieu Cemetery under the direction of Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home.
Itâ€™s been 17 years since a Blackwell football team got past the first round of the Six-Man playoffs. But it took less than 24 hours af-ter the Hornetsâ€™ 70-26 win over Lueders-Avoca this past Friday to find out who they would play in the regional round this week.
According to Blackwell coach Clint Lowry, his team will play Grandfalls-Royalty at 7 p.m. Friday in Rankin. Grandfalls-Royalty will be considered the home team for the contest.
Both teams come into the game ranked in the top 10 in Six-Man Division II.
