Regional art show this weekend

The West Texas Art Guild is having its annual Regional Art Show on Saturday, Nov. 23, at the Civic Center in Colorado City.
Artwork can be brought and entered into the show from 8-10 a.m. Entry fee per piece is $10 for members and $15 for non-members.
Ribbons and prize money will be awarded by the judge, Dianna Lee Jones from San Angelo. Categories include: oil / acrylics, watercolor, dry media (pastel, pencil, etc.), photography, and 3-D (jewelry, sculpture, etc.).

TSTC welcomes new instructors

Texas State Technical College (TSTC) West Texas has hired two new instructors. James Beall has joined the Wind Energy Program and is teaching several subjects, including Electricity Principals and Wind Power Delivery. Beall received an Associates degree from TSTC in 2011, where he graduated with honors. "I'm looking forward to sharing my experiences and knowledge with my students," said Beall. "My goal is to get them properly trained and out into the work field." Beall lives in Sweetwater and has two children, Jason, 10 and Joseph, 9.

New businesses welcomed to Sweetwater

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Wednesday morning for Rolling Plains RV Park and Mr. C's Asphalt and Maintenance, located at 9909 South I-20 (west of the TA Travel Center) between exits 240 and 242. Pictured center are Jennifer Speed and Rose Carroll, owner of Rolling Plains RV Park and Sweetwater RV Park. Rose is from the Fort Worth and Mission, Texas areas. She is involved in a total of nine RV parks with her family. "We wanted to fix the park up to help fill the housing need when the oil boom really hits," said Rose about Rolling Plains RV Park.

SNAP building now complete

The SNAP (Senior Nutrition Activities Program) building is finally completed and is ready to welcome back its patrons.
On Wednesday, the final items were being moved into the new facility, according to SNAP director Tonya Challis. She expressed the staff's excitement to finally move into the building.
Operations will resume on Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. — their typical hours of business, with lunch being served at noon. On Friday, SNAP will hold its annual Thanksgiving lunch.

Sweetwater ISD prepares for next school year

Sweetwater ISD is already making preparations for the next school year, as proposed calendars were presented to the Board of Trustees during their meeting on Monday evening.
With the district's use of Flex Days, one calendar option resulted in classes ending in June since the Flex Days were placed at the end of the school year. The other option, which was amended by the board, included a Labor Day holiday and an early release day the day before Thanksgiving, with the year ending in May.

Gary Donald Blair

Gary Donald Blair, formerly of Sweetwater, died at his residence in North Carolina.
He has gone to meet his maker and is now reunited with his late wife Karen Blair. He will be deeply missed. He wasn't just our brother, he was our best friend.
He loved hunting and old cars. He was born Oct. 28, 1959 in Rotan, moved to Sweetwater for a while and then moved to Dallas. He finally moved to North Carolina where he lived for 16 years and passed away.

Hornets, Cowboys set to collide today

It shouldn’t come as a big surprise that a change has forced Blackwell’s football team to make some last-minute adjustments. It’s been happening all year.
On Wednesday, it was announced that the Hor-nets’ playoff game against Grandfalls-Royalty would be played today in Rankin — 24 hours earlier than scheduled — due to icy weather forecasts for Friday.
Blackwell (10-1) had to cancel three of its 10 regular-season games, managing to reschedule only one, so the shuffle is nothing new. And head coach Clint Lowry says his team looks forward to continuing its best playoff run in 17 years.

Playoffs at Bowl will start today

Mustang Bowl is hosting a pair of playoff games this week, starting today with a Class 1A, Division I area matchup between Wind-thorst and Sundown that will kick off at 6:30 p.m.
The second playoff game is a Class 2A, Division I area game between Denver City and Bangs at 7:30 p.m. Fri-day.
Bangs (8-3) is coming to Mustang Bowl for the sec-ond straight year. In 2012, the Dragons played here in the area round against Idalou and won, 23-6, to advance to regionals before losing to Eastland.

Blackwell girls, Highland teams get wins

The Blackwell girls bas-ketball team began its 2013-14 season Tuesday with a convincing 58-26 victory on the road at Loraine.
Stephanie Metcalf paced Blackwell with 13 points and Halee Sanderson had 12. Brooklyn Harris added nine, Hailey Bennett and Shianne Solis six, Crystal Chavez and Abby Gott five and Brena Robison two. Blackwell led 15-3, 30-9 and 46-18 at the end of the quarter breaks.
