Doug Sitter State Farm accepting toiletry donations

November 27, 2013

Doug Sitter State Farm is taking toiletry donations again this year for the West Texas Children’s Advocacy Center. 
What the center does this time of year is give all the families they help throughout the year toiletries just before Christmas in addition to putting up the Angel Tree at Wal-Mart. Donations can be dropped off at 208 Lamar Street.
Those wishing to donate cash may do so and Doug Sitter State Farm will buy the toiletry items to be donated. All donations are appreciated.

Goodfellows accepting donations

It’s that time of year again and the Sweetwater Goodfellows are getting ready to help needy Nolan County families have a better Christmas. Sweetwater Goodfellows provides food and toys to needy families with children and food to needy individuals during the Christmas season.

For your Thanksgiving Day forecast, expect sunny skies with a high near 55. Winds will be from the south at 10 to 15 mph.
Tonight's low will be around 33, with mostly clear skies and winds remaining from the south at 5 to 10 mph.

Black Friday sales beginning earlier

Many retailers are announcing that their stores will be opening their stores earlier this year for their Black Friday sales, including stores in Sweetwater.
Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Sears, Tractor Supply and Bealls will open on Thanksgiving day at different times offering their low priced specials.
Wal-Mart will have three events with the first beginning at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. The second event will begin at 8 p.m. that day and the third event will begin at 8 a.m. on Friday. (See the pull-out advertising insert in our Thursday edition.)

Goates joins Reporter staff

A familiar face in the community is joining the Sweetwater Reporter, as Pam Goates is the newest advertising executive.
Goates started her work at the Reporter on November 19. Her previous positions as secretary at two local churches have provided her with office experience which will be beneficial in this new venture.
Goates said that she enjoys any opportunity that will allow her to meet and interact with people. Her new role will allow her to continue to build relationships with people through selling advertisements for the local newspaper.

Update given on jail construction

The afternoon session of the Nolan County Commissioners’ meeting on Monday included an update from Turner Construction on the courthouse, jail and sheriff’s offices.
Notably, work on the courthouse continues as insulation continues to be installed. Work has begun on the northwest side and will continue into the next two weeks.
Some work has been done on the masonry and will continue into the next two weeks as installation will take place on the east side. Drywall is also being worked on the east side of the building.

New POS software approved for RPMH

The Nolan County Hospital District board of directors approved new POS (point of sale) software for the dietary department during their meeting Monday night at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
The item has been budgeted for some time, but the request was made this year. The software--totaling around $16,000--will help update the department through various means.

Lonnie Henry

Lonnie Henry, age 75, of Snyder, passed away Sunday, Nov. 24, 2013 in Snyder. 
Memorial service will be held Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013, at 10 a.m. in the Wright Colonial Funeral Home chapel with Reverend Alan McGuire officiating. Services are under the direction of Wright Colonial Funeral Home. 
Mr. Henry was born on June 13, 1938 in Jacksonville, TX. He owned and operated Lonnie’s Barber Shop in Roscoe until his retirement in 1978. He then drove a bus for Snyder ISD and McKinney ISD for 10 years. He loved being around his family and especially his grandchildren. 

Six Lady ‘Stangs receive honors in 4-3A

A total of six Sweetwater High School athletes have earned all-District 4-3A vol-leyball recognition for their outstanding play during the 2013 season.
Senior Aly Heredia and sophomore Morgan Gomez were named to the 4-3A first team, wihle seniors Kayla Chowning and Shaneese Brown both made the sec-ond team. Junior Maddie Jones and sophomore Mikeilah Foust earned all-district honorable mention. It was the first time any of the six Lady Mustangs have received all-district honors.

SW girls fall at Abernathy, 66-51

Sweetwater fell behind 22-10 at Abernathy in the teams’ non-district girls basketball game Tuesday in part because of difficulties handling the press.
Though the Lady Mus-tangs were able to close the gap to six points in the sec-ond period, they never com-pletely recovered and lost the game, 66-51.
“We had 24 turnovers,” said Sweetwater coach Al Miller, whose team’s record dropped to 2-3. “We kind of shot ourselves in the foot and we got outhustled a bit. They were a little quicker than we were.”
