Donations needed at Nolan County Welfare Association

November 29, 2013

With the holiday season fast approaching, the Nolan County Welfare Association (NCWA) wants to let the community know that their doors are open.
Rut (pronounced "root") Crowley, director of the NCWA, stated that they are able to give individuals one bag of food per month, stocked with one of each item that is in the food pantry. First-time recipients must fill out some paperwork prior to receiving the donation.

SMS students to begin food drive

Sweetwater Middle School Student Council will start a canned food drive for their campus food pantry on Monday, Dec. 2.
Anyone in the community can bring in nonperishable food items that will help SMS families. The campus food pantry will open in January.

Buzzi Unicem USA announces major expansion of Maryneal cement plant

Buzzi Unicem USA announced that it plans to modernize and expand itscement production facility located at Maryneal, Texas. The project will reduce the plant’s environmental footprint while more than doubling capacity to serve the increasing demand for cement for the construction and oil and gas industries. With the expansion, cement production capacity at the Maryneal, Texas plant will be increased from 550,000 short tons per year to 1.2 million short tons per year.

Clem to run for District Clerk

Jamie Clem is announcing her candidacy for Nolan County District Clerk.
Born and raised in Nolan County and a graduate of Blackwell CISD, Clem also attended American Commercial College and earned a degree in business accounting.
"I have been married to my husband, Weldon Clem, for 18 years," she said. "We have four children: Kevin Jones and wife Sarah, and Lorin Lopez and husband Peter, all of Sweetwater; Robyn Redder and husband Dwayne of Munday, Texas; and Christopher Clem and wife Dee Dee of Houston, Texas."

Jaycees donate to Coats for Kids

The Sweetwater Jaycees donated $200 in new children coats to the local Coats for Kids project. They also donated Jaycee jackets and hoodies.
"I am so blessed to have their continued support in my adventures," said Heather Gesin.

Jerry Vernon DeShazo

Geraldine Marjorie Chapman, 91, passed away on Nov. 22, 2013, at Midland Memorial Hospital after a short illness. Jerry was born to James and Ethel Chapman on March 10, 1922 in Arah, Texas.
Jerry married John Ulmer Vernon on August 11, 1941 and made Hermleigh their home.
Jerry was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings, Thomas Emmett (Tom), Floyd Jones (Jones), Ethel Mae, Ruby Lucille, Nannie Claudie (Pat) and Harry Rosser; and by her husband and wonderful father to their three children, John Ulmer Vernon; and her husband and life long friend, Jeff DeShazo.

All-district Hornets

First came a 10-win sea-son, the first in 17 years.
As a result, 10 Blackwell players have been chosen to the all-District 8, Division II six-man team as a tribute to the Hornets’ season which saw them win the district title and advance past the bi-district round for the first time since 1996.
Blackwell’s Jayden Jones and Matthew Lowry were named the District 8, Divi-sion II offensive and defensive MVPs, respectively.

Several enter pleas in District Court

Several entered pleas during 32nd Judicial District court proceedings this week.
Randall Ray Boyd, Jr. pleaded true to revoking his probation. He was originally put on probation for indecency with a child by exposure, a third degree felony. Boyd was sentenced to eight years confinement in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. He was also ordered to ay a $1,000 fine, $225 in court costs and $900 in attorney's fees. He will receive 476 days credit towards his sentence for time already served in jail.

RPMH board hears report from FFT

A report was presented by First Financial Trust (FFT) during the Monday night meeting of the Nolan County Hospital District's board of directors.
The meeting was held at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH), in which the presentation was part of the monthly report from Hospital Administrator Donna Boatright.
Making the presentation to the board were Wayne Chowning and Bill Rowe. With the previous review taking place 18 months ago, the purpose of the report was to show how the bond market has changed and what measures to take in moving forward.
