SFD hires three firefighters

The Sweetwater Fire Department is welcoming three new firefighters to the station.
Zachary Williams of Hawley, Texas is one of three new additions to the Sweetwater Fire Department. Williams, a firefighter and paramedic who studied at Cisco College and Texas State Technical College, was influenced by his father, Tommy, who retired from the Abilene Fire Department after 18 years. Williams is married to Lacy, and the couple have a two-year-old named Bryson.

SW teams stop Early

Sweetwater swept its first boys-girls basketball doubleheader of the season on Tuesday, as both squads won their games at Early.
The boys rallied for a 58-50 win in their opener. The girls also won, 52-48, in a game that saw Sweetwater shoot an amazing 52 free throws — though the Lady Mustangs made just 23.

Taylor McPherson, who by herself attempted 24 free throws, scored 19 points to pace Sweetwater (2-2).

WTEC inaugural conference slated for December

The West Texas Energy Consortium (“Consortium”) announced that it will hold its Inaugural Conference in Big Spring on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013. The Consortium is a collaborative forum for business and industry representatives and partners in education, workforce, housing, local government and the non-profit sector, within the various counties comprising the West Central Texas, Concho Valley and Permian Basin Regions to further the development and economic opportunities associated with the unconventional resource shale plays in the area.

Several businesses hosted open houses in Sweetwater on Monday, offering refreshments and sales at their stores.

Doug Sitter State Farm accepting toiletry donations

November 19, 2013

Doug Sitter State Farm is taking toiletry donations again this year for the West Texas Children’s Advocacy Center. 
What the center does this time of year is give all the families they help throughout the year toiletries just before Christmas in addition to putting up the Angel Tree at Wal-Mart. Donations can be dropped off at 208 Lamar Street.
Those wishing to donate cash may do so and Doug Sitter State Farm will buy the toiletry items to be donated. All donations are appreciated.

Five nominated to NCCAD board

At a special-called meeting of the Nolan County Commissioners on Monday morning, approval was given to nominate five members to the board of directors for the Nolan County Central Appraisal District.
The five members nominated were Jerry Rozzlle, Randall Smith, Domingo Castillo, Mike Ensminger and Jerry Lee Hunt. Stepping down from the board will be Ben High and Mark Meneses.

Isidra L. Rios

November 19, 2013

Funeral services for Isidra L. Rios, 88, of San Angelo will be held at 11 a.m on Friday, November 22, 2013 at McCoy Chapel of Memories in Sweetwater. Rev. Frankie Santiago will officiate and interment will follow at Mitchell County Cemetery in Colorado City under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, November 21 at McCoy Funeral Home.
Rios died Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at Community Hospital in San Angelo.
She was born February 9, 1925 in Colorado City. She married Domingo Rios on August 26, 1966 in Colorado City.
