On Wednesday Buzzi Unicem USA, located in Maryneal, was honored at the Workforce Solutions Board meeting. They were recognized for receiving the Local Employer of Excellence Award for the Workforce Solutions of West Central Texas, at the Texas Workforce Commissionâ€™s (TWC) 17th Annual Texas Workforce Conference held Dec. 4-6 in San Antonio. The Local Employer Award of Excellence Award honors employers that are actively involved with their local Workforce Board and have made a positive impact on employers, workers and the community.
A campus report was given by Sweetwater High School principal Stacy Jones at Monday night's meeting of the Sweetwater ISD (Independent School District) board of trustees.
In continuing with an initiative started last school year by the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program, high school seniors can purchase a ceiling tile at any spot in the hallway for $5 and decorate it following their acceptance to college. The students are then given their tiles at the senior dinner held at the end of the school year.
Clara Lorain Hill, age 89, of Sweetwater, passed away on Friday, Dec. 20, 2013 in Midland.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 23, 2013, at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel with Dusty Lovell officiating.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 23, 2013, at Fairview Cemetery in Midland with Dusty Lovell officiating. Burial will follow. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

The City of Sweetwater business offices will be closed Dec. 24 and 25 in observance of the Christmas holidays and Jan. 1, for New Yearâ€™s Day.
There will be no residential refuse collection on Tuesday, Dec. 24, or Wednesday, Dec. 25, as well as Wednesday, Jan. 1, New Yearâ€™s Day. All residential containers will be serviced during the remainder of those days during that work week.
The Citizens Drop-Off-Center and Type-IV Landfill will be closed Tuesday, Dec. 24, and Wednesday, Dec. 25, and also on Wednesday, Jan. 1.
Three reports were presented and approved at the Monday night meeting of the SISD (Sweetwater Independent School District) Board of Trustees.
A public hearing was included as part of 2012-2013 TAPR (Texas Academic Performance Report) report, but no public input was heard. This report is similar to the previous AEIS (Academic Excellence Indicator System) reports, but is now under a different name.
Firefighters responded to a house fire on Silas Street in Sweetwater around 11 p.m. Tuesday night. According to the Fire Chief Grant Madden, as well as the owner of the home, the cause of the fire was a candle that was left burning throughout the night.
According to Chief Madden, the owner of the home says that her power was turned off and that is the reason why she had candles burning. Before she went to sleep, she blew out the candles with the exception of one.
She and her grandchild were the only people in the home and they both escaped without injuries.
Dance students with the Sweetwater Performing Arts Center will be performing again with the Municipal Band for a few songs during the band's annual Christmas concert. Shown is a performance from 2012.
Several vocalists and the Greater Zion Baptist Church Choir will participate this year as well. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium.
Admission is free, but donations of canned goods will be accepted.
Irene Pendergrass, age 90, of San Angelo (longtime resident of Nolan), passed away on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013, in San Angelo.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013, at Nolan Baptist Church with Rev. Vic Meyer officiating, assisted by Billy Oliver. Burial will follow at Slaterâ€™s Chapel Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, Dec. 20, 2013, from 6-8 p.m.
Colleen Leonor Bishop, age 85, of Snyder, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2013, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital in Sweetwater, after a lengthy illness.
Services for Mrs. Bishop will be held on Friday, Dec. 20, 2013 at 10 a.m. at Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home withÂ her grandsonsÂ officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Memorial Gardens under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
