Anna L. Newman

Anna L. Newman, 81, of Sweetwater, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013 in Sweetwater.
No services are planned, as she was cremated. Arrangements are under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home in Sweetwater.
She was born on May 23, 1932 in Ventura, Calif. She married John Newman in Fort Worth.
She was born to parents John and Beulla Johnson on May 23, 1932. She loved to camp. She lived in Sweetwater since 2008.
Survivors include her sons, Billy Briggs of Sweetwater and Michael Briggs of Sweetwater; many grandchildren; and a sister, Lucille “Lucky” Turley of Missouri.

BridgeTex Pipeline construction begins in surrounding counties

The BridgeTex Pipeline is a joint venture between Magallan Midstream Partners (MMP) and Occidental Petroleum. Magallan is constructing the pipeline to transport crude oil from the Permian Basin to the Houston area and will also be the pipeline operator. The project consists of approximately 450 miles of 20” to 24” pipe from Colorado City to Houston with a capacity of 300,000 barrels per day. Construction is expected to be complete by July 2014. Shown is construction in southern Fisher County crossing under Highway 70.

Lamar, Arizona intersection to be four-way stop as signal work begins

TxDOT is planning signal work this week at Arizona Avenue near Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital as work progresses on the Lamar Street (SH 70) reconstruction project.
The intersection at Lamar and Arizona will temporarily be posted as a four-way stop beginning Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014 to allow crews to replace the existing traffic signals. Warning signs will be posted to alert traffic of the change. Traffic flow and access in the vicinity of the hospital will be maintained at all times.
The new signals should be installed and functioning within about a week.

Two-vehicle accident on US-277 kills one driver

A two-vehicle accident outside of Abilene kills one driver early Sunday afternoon.
According to DPS, a pickup truck heading northbound on US-277 (eight miles south of Abilene) lost control on icy road conditions around 2:30 p.m. The driver struck a guardrail, crossed over the center stripe and crashed into an SUV heading southbound.
The driver of the SUV, 53-year-old Randall Castleberry of Abilene died after the vehicle went over the bridge. Castleberry was pronounced dead at the scene by Judge Doan before 3 p.m. Two other passengers including a 7-year-old were treated for stable injuries.

Three years later: Still no arrest in Hailey Dunn case

It's a story that received national attention: the disappearance of 13-year-old Hailey Dunn from her Colorado City home in December 2010.
For over two years, volunteers and law enforcement officials searched for the teenager, hoping she would be found alive. In March of this year, a rock collector discovered human remains in a dried-up portion of Lake JB Thomas in Scurry County, about 20 miles from Hailey's home. A month later, the remains were confirmed to be those of Dunn.

Robbery at 7-11

A local convenience store was the location of a robbery over the weekend.
According to Sweetwater Chief of Police Brian Frieda, a call was received around 1:05 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 29. The call reported a possible aggravated robbery at the 7-11 store located at 1400 Hailey.
As noted in the initial report, the store clerk stated that a male entered the store, dressed in black and wearing a black ski mask. He was also brandishing a weapon.

Blowout causes truck fire

An 18-wheeler's tire blow-out led to a fire recently on Interstate 20 west of Roscoe.
According to emergency and fire authorities, bales of hay caught fire in the back of an 18-wheeler when the truck had a blow-out. The fire got into the middle of the hay bales and many were strewn across the median to ensure that the fire would stop.
A truck from Comanche came to haul the hay bales to rest of their way to their destination.

Longtime Sweetwater optometrist dies Friday

Dr. John R. Cox III, 81, of Sweetwater passed away on Friday, Dec. 27, 2013 at Shannon Hospital in San Angelo.
Private family graveside services were held at noon on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, at Sweetwater Cemetery with a family member officiating. Services were under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home in Sweetwater.
He was born on July 14, 1932, in Sweetwater. He married Martha Yvonne Grissom on July 2, 1959, in Post.

Gerald D. Bohall

Memorial services for Gerald D. Bohall, 78, of Sweetwater will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 3, 2014, at Sweetwater Cornerstone Fellowship Church with Rev. Tom Fraley officiating.
Bohall died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013 at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
He was born on Feb. 25, 1935 in Tularosa, New Mexico. Gerald married Maritha Faye Oden on March 10, 1953, in Elmirage, Ariz.
