January 28th
In addition to death and taxes, there is at least one other thing you can count on: the Highland girls basketball team in the playoffs.
Highland (7-0 in District 13-A, 24-3 overall) wrapped up its 12th straight postseason trip on Friday by annihilating Ira, 93-36, in Ira.
Four Lady Hornets hit double figures, led by Beth Richburg’s 22 points and Sierra Allen’s 19. Hannah Allen had 12 points, while Madison Moseley had 10.
Sydny Helbert had nine points, Kaylee Martin six, Lora Stewart five, Stephan-ie Ashford four and Morgan Monroe three.
The Blackwell boys got back into the win column on Friday by beating Sterling City, 44-28, as they improved their rec-ord to 2-7 in District 14-A and 4-17 overall.
The Hornets were led by Wade Allen with 18 points and Ethan Andrews with 14. Ted Chambliss and Jayden Jones had four, Mason Magness three and Doug Hardy one. Blackwell used a 19-0 second quarter to take a 32-9 halftime lead.
Blackwell’s girls lost to Sterling City, 63-15, in the first game of the double-header and is 1-10 in dis-trict play (2-18 overall).

January 26th
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) was called to the scene of a two vehicle head-on collision Friday evening in Taylor County. The crash happened at 8:21 p.m. on Texas 36 and the intersection with County Road 107 (known locally as Potosi Road). Two people are dead and five are injured in the crash.
DECEASED:
1. Jeffery Dane Davis, 27 years of age from Abilene, was pronounced dead at the scene by Judge Deatherage. The body was taken to Abilene Professional Services. Mr. Davis was the driver of the Dodge Pickup.
The Sweetwater ISD (Independent School District) Board of Trustees were honored with a proclamation at their board meeting on Thursday night by Sweetwater Mayor Greg Wortham.
All across Texas, school districts are honoring their board members this month to commemorate School Board Recognition Month. Thursday's meeting brought the proclamation to the local front.
The "Digging a Well" book signing will be held at Holiday Inn in Sweetwater on Monday from 1-5 p.m. The book's author, Sherry Long, was the secretary at the Mitchell-Scurry Baptist Associational Office under Bro. Darold Baldwin in 2001-2002.
Long is a women's ministry leader, pastor's wife, pianist, vocalist, songwriter and recently published author of "Digging a Well." The book shows how to find your aquifer in a dry and barren land.
Texas Country Band, the Josh Abbott Band was part of the entertainment lineup at the 2013 Black Tie & Boots Inaugural Ball on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013 at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, MD.Â

Billie Sue Alberty, 79, of Sweetwater, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
Memorial services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are with McCoy Funeral Home.
