Vermillion receives music honors

Hannah Vermillion, piano student of Noreen Carson, received second place honors in the Grade 5-6 category in the Abilene Music Teachers Association's Local Performance Contest held in the Woodward-Dellis Recital Hall at Hardin Simmons University on Feb. 16.
She is the daughter of Chad and Mary Vermillion.

Purchases approved at RPHM board meeting

At the Monday evening board meeting of the Nolan County Hospital District held at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH), approval was given for the purchase of two Phillips EKG (electrocardiogram) modules for the Emergency Room department.
According to Rosa Best, the Chief Nursing Officer at RPMH, the modules are portable, which leads to even quicker care for patients. The amount of time it takes to offer this type of care is a factor in quality measures and compliance scores.

Baucom says Highland not afraid of taking on No. 1-ranked Saltillo

The Highland girls basketball team has opened a lot of eyes in the past week by making it to the state tournament for the first time in school history.
The Lady Hornets will face another big challenge on Friday, when they face No. 1-ranked Saltillo in the Class 1A, Division II semifinals. The game will tip off at 1:30 p.m. at the University of Texas' Frank Erwin Center in Austin.

SHS graduates making a difference

Texas A&M students Ben and Adrian Lopez and Briana Munoz, Sweetwater High School graduates, recently participated in the Aggie replant project in Bastrop, Texas in an effort to bring back some of the forest that was lost in the great fire that devastated much of the town.
The project is a volunteer service of Texas A&M University students to replant pine seedlings in the area of the fire. Each student was committed to plant 30 pine seedling in a day-long effort.
Ben Lopez is a junior, Briana Munoz is a sophomore, and Adrian Lopez is a freshman at Texas A&M University College Station.

Results presented from SPD racial profiling report

During the February meeting of the City Commission, Sweetwater Police Chief Brian Frieda offered the annual report regarding racial profiling statistics, which was formally accepted by the commissioners during the meeting.
The process of conducting the report has undergone some change, but not only from the leadership of Frieda. New state legislation states that the report must now specify if race was known prior to the officer interacting with the person.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 41 calls for service, issued two citations and made three arrests on Feb. 26, 2013.

The SPD received 25, 911 calls.

Accidents:
• 1600 block of Sam Houston.
• 800 block of W. Third.

Arrested by SPD:
• Anthony Alarcon, 26 — Accident involving damage less than $200.
• Marquese Mabry, 26 — Possession of marijuana/warrant.
• Von Sam Moates, Jr., 23 — Public intoxication.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had six calls for service, served no civil papers and made two arrests on Feb. 26, 2013.

Mustangs hope to stay on a roll entering Classic

Although the Sweetwater baseball team is only play-ing .500 ball so far, the Mustangs have been close to having a 6-0 record.
Sweetwater, which takes on Clyde at 4 p.m. today when it begins play at its annual Wood Bat Classic, is off to a 3-3 start. However, those three losses — all of them coming at a tournament in Granbury this past weekend — were by a total of five runs to three teams in the Fort Worth area.
The three wins, on the other hand, have been by an aggregate 33-5 score.

Lady ‘Stangs rally past Graham

The Sweetwater softball team picked up its fifth con-secutive win in dramatic fashion here Tuesday.
The Lady Mustangs, who one point trailed 9-2, staged a huge comeback at Jerry Collins Complex as they de-feated Graham, 12-11.
Sweetwater, now 9-5, got its latest win with a six-run sixth inning and a four-run seventh. Maty Montgomery delivered the game-winning hit, which scored Megan Holsey and Abby Garcia.

Regional girls powerlifters compete Saturday

These nine Sweetwater High School girls powerlifters will go to Fort Stockton to compete in the Region I meet on Saturday.
