Three pets available for adoption through local animal shelter

Sweetwater Animal Control currently has three pets available for adoption.
Available for adoption is a male kitten, along with two Labrador mix puppies — one male (bottom right) and one female (bottom left).
According to Sweetwater’s animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.
The pets are required to have their vaccination before they leave to their new homes.

City election called

Approval was given on Tuesday on an ordinance calling for an election to be held on Saturday, May 11 to vote for a mayor and two city commissioners.
Those positions are currently filled by Sweetwater Mayor Greg Wortham, Larry May for Precinct 1 and Ricky Castro in Precinct 3. An election calendar was included in the meeting packets, which outlined specific dates and deadlines.
Also during the meeting, several citizens were approved to serve in a variety of civil boards.

Lady ‘Stangs will play Lubbock Cooper in Post

The Sweetwater girls basketball team will play its area round playoff game with Lubbock Cooper at 6 p.m. Friday at Post High School.
Sweetwater (21-14), making its first postseason appearance since 2005, defeated Fort Stockton 58-43 in bi-district after winning a third-place district tiebreaker against Big Spring last Friday. Lubbock Cooper (29-4) earned a first-round playoff bye as District 2-3A champion.
The game will be the first half of a playoff doubleheader, as Wylie plays Levelland starting at 7:30 p.m. Friday's winners will play each other in the regional quarterfinals next week.

Business welcomed by Chamber

The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors, along with members of the community, welcomed Nicole Neff at the new Edward Jones office, located at 110 E. Broadway with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Cline Shale planning continues

A recap of the recent Cline Shale Session was given during Monday's SEED (Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development) board meeting by Kirstin Smith, during her monthly Asst. Marketing/Admin. Director update.
The meeting, which took place last Friday in Colorado City, saw higher attendance than anticipated with 166 participants. The rise in attendance was largely credited to representatives from state agencies and other groups.

Student collects donations to benefit teacher’s family

Fourth grade student at Sweetwater Intermediate School, Danner Foust, collected money throughout the school, his church and family to donate to Mrs. Andrea Renteria, his homeroom teacher.
Her family recently lost their home and all of their belongings in a fire.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 58 calls for service, issued five citations and made four arrests on Feb. 12, 2013.

The SPD received 19, 911 calls.

• Theft — 300 block of Lamar.
• Criminal trespass — 1400 block of Hughes.

Playoff season begins for Highland’s teams Friday

The playoff season will get started for Highland’s basketball teams on Friday.
Technically, the Highland girls (27-4) — who ended the regular season Feb. 5 as District 13-A, Division II champions with a perfect 10-0 mark — will have the only playoff game. The Lady Hornets take on Zephyr in the area playoffs at Clyde with tip-off set for 7 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Highland boys make a much shorter trip today — to Roscoe —to play a district tiebreaker game against Hermleigh that will start at 4 p.m.

Clyde uses 7-run 6th to outscore Lady Mustangs softball team in opener

Clyde broke open a close game against Sweetwater with a seven-run sixth in-ning on Tuesday en route to beating the Lady Mustangs, 16-7, in their opening game of the 2013 season at the Jerry Collins Complex.
Sweetwater led only once — 2-0 after one inning — but trailed only 8-7 after coming up with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
