Cornerstone Christian School invites community to Beat the Street for Little Feet

Now that the New Year has begun, Cornerstone Christian School has come up with an event to help the whole family get a good start on their health for 2013. Beat the Street for Little Feet will serve as a fun, healthy activity for the family to enjoy together while providing funds for the school’s expansion efforts.

American Red Cross seeking disaster response volunteers

Home fires, floods, wildfires and tornadoes are just a few of the disasters the American Red Cross responds to each and every day, but the Red Cross can't be there without volunteers. With severe weather season fast approaching, the American Red Cross is issuing a community-wide appeal for new volunteers to become trained and ready to respond should a disaster occur in the community.

RSB to host Chamber Coffee

The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce will hold its monthly Chamber Coffee at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at Roscoe State Bank located at 209 Cedar in Sweetwater.
Roscoe State Bank is owned by President/CEO John Jay. The Sweetwater branch President is John Davis.
Roscoe State Bank, established in 1906, offers a variety of banking products, including checking and savings accounts, certificates of deposits, individual retirement accounts and personal and commercial loans. Roscoe State Bank serves Sweetwater, Roscoe and the surrounding areas.
The bank was named Business of the Year in 2012.

Senior girls to play final basketball game at home

The Lady Mustang Seniors will play their last home game of the season in the Sweetwater High School Gym tonight against Wylie.

The Sweetwater DECA chapter recently competed at District Competition in San Angelo. DECA is a Professional Business Organization for students to demonstrate their skills in different business categories.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 146 calls for service, issued 20 citation and made nine arrests from Feb. 1-3, 2013.

The SPD received 58, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Criminal mischief — 1000 block of View.
• Disorderly conduct — 900 block of W. Colorado.
• Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon — 1100 block of Ash.
• Theft — 1200 block of W. Arkansas.
• Theft — 900 block of Lamar.
• Family violence assault/violate protective order — 900 block of Hillside.

Arrested by SPD:
• Codi Keller, 34 — Warrant.

Stanley W. Pieper

February 5, 2013

Stanley W. Pieper, age 71, of Sweetwater, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013 at Sweetwater Healthcare Center.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013 at Roscoe First Baptist Church with Rev. Adam Davis officiating. Burial will follow at Roscoe Cemetery. Arrangements under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

S’water hosts final DH

Tonight’s games against Wylie mark the final time Sweetwater’s basketball teams host a doubleheader at Mustang Gym, and it will also be the girls team’s last regular-season game.
While both teams will be facing long odds of beating Wylie — whose teams are a combined 16-0 in district play — each has shown im-provement over last season and the girls still have a shot at making the playoffs.
Sweetwater and Big Spring are 5-4 this season in District 4-3A and are locked in a third-place tie, and each has won against the other in district play.

Sub-varsity teams split with Snyder

Sweetwater’s sub-varsity basketball teams gained a split in their games Friday here against Snyder.
The JV girls were most dominant, beating Snyder 58-27 as they improved to 22-1 overall and 8-1 in district. Coming off its first loss of the season three days earlier at Monahans, Sweet-water roared out to a 24-2 lead after the first quarter and led 37-12 at halftime against Snyder.

SW powerlifters at Cooper’s meet

Sweetwater High School’s girls and boys powerlifters competed this past Friday at Abilene Cooper’s meet.
Both SHS teams will be competing at Clyde’s meet to held this Thursday and then serve as host teams for the Arlon Barnes Classic to be held here Feb. 14. The Sweetwater boys also have a qualifying meet Feb. 23 at Hawley.
The individual results from Abilene Cooper’s meet follow, with the total weight lifted in parentheses:
Sweetwater boys:
Donald Baker — 1st in 148-pound class (1,040)
Austin Marlett — 3rd in 165-pound class (1,035)
Steven Le — 5th in 165-pound class (980)
