Thomas elected to the Executive Council of the Texas Young Lawyers Association

C. Barrett Thomas, Assistant District Attorney for the 32ndJudicial District Attorney’s Office, was elected to the Executive Council of the Texas Young Lawyers Association (TYLA) this week. Thomas has served on the TYLA’s Board of Directors since 2011, but he will now assume the role of treasurer for the upcoming year. Thomas will continue to work as a felony criminal prosecutor under the direction of District Attorney, Ann Reed, where he has served since September of 2011. Thomas also manages a family law practice, The Thomas Firm, which has been based in Sweetwater since he joined Ms.

Local church offers Bible reading program

Never found time to read the Bible? First Presbyterian Church (FPC) of Sweetwater is starting an all-ages program to Read the Bible in 90 Days.
Pastor Kary Fry wants to promote Bible literacy and says, "A whole generation of us were raised on Bible themes, where the Bible was used only as reference."
While many people may feel that they're not "smart" enough or don't have the background to attend Sunday school, this program will be for beginners, and literally get everyone on the same page. The program is open to all.

SISD Choir competes at Solo/Ensemble contest

The Sweetwater Choral Department competed this past Saturday at the UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest at McMurry University.
All six Sweetwater Middle School soloists received a First Division Superior rating including Tiffany Bugarin, Megan Dean, Crystal Foust, Martin Morini, Kelsey Parker and Tarryn Velasquez.
The Sweetwater High School soloists were also successful. Abby McPherson received a 2nd Division Excellent. Four freshman received a First Division Superior including Kilanie Arpin, Cierra Knox, Brittany Jimenez and Dylan Jimenez.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 49 calls for service, issued eight citations and made one arrest on Feb. 6, 2013.

The SPD received 17, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Family violence assault — 1200 block of Ragland.
• Runaway/criminal mischief — 1900 block of Bristol.

Arrested by SPD:
• Chad Parsons, 19 — Warrants.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had seven calls for service, served no civil papers and made five arrests on Feb. 6, 2013.

Arrested by NCSO:
• David Leon Archer, 44, of Sweetwater — Warrant/motion to revoke probation.

Alvin Wayne Smith

February 8, 2013

A graveside service for Alvin Wayne Smith, 82, of Tyler, will be at 3 p.m. on Sunday. Feb. 10, 2013, at Newman Cemetery in Fisher County with his family officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 10, at McCoy Funeral Home, located at 401 E. Third Street in Sweetwater.
Smith died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013, at Veterans Hospital in Temple.

Harold Waggoner

Harold Waggoner, age 76, of Sweetwater, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013, at Nolan Nursing and Rehab.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013 at Hylton Cemetery with Mike Ensminger officiating. Arrangements under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
Harold was born on Sept. 1, 1936, in Hylton, Texas to William Floyd and Zora D. (Stewart) Waggoner. He was a member of the Church of Christ.

Harvey A. Nash

Masonic graveside services for Harvey A. Nash, 101, of Sweetwater, will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at Garden of Memories Cemetery in Sweetwater. Members from Sweetwater Masonic Lodge #571 will officiate with interment to follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Nash died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013 at Sweetwater Healthcare Center.

SW, Big Spring break tie today

There are several things Sweetwater must do today vs. Big Spring in order to realize its dream of making the playoffs and ending a long drought, says Lady Mustang coach Al Miller.
“We talked about having low turnovers and managing the game like we’re supposed to. Not letting them have wide-open 3s. Taking care of the ball and giving them one shot on offense.”
If Sweetwater had done a better job in just a couple of those areas the last time the teams played each other, today’s third-place district tiebreaker between two teams with 5-5 records wouldn’t be necessary.

Highland, Roscoe play warmups

Though they don’t start the playoffs until next week, the Highland and Roscoe girls basketball teams won’t be idle this weekend. Both have scheduled warmup games to prepare them for postseason play.
Highland (10-0 in District 13-A, 27-3) plays Valley at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in Jay-ton after ending district with a 67-24 win over Hermleigh while Roscoe (7-3, 18-11) gets a tuneup at 5 p.m. today vs. Zephyr in Zephyr.

Sweetwater boys host Coleman — freshmen at 4:30 p.m., JV at 6 p.m., varsity at 7:30 p.m. Sweetwater...
The Roscoe girls basket-ball team lost at Haskell, 57-34, to start District 7-2A play on Tuesday....
