Following action taken by the Nolan County Commissioners at their Monday meeting, six mobile radio systems will be purchased for the Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO). The full cost will be reimbursed by the FY (fiscal year) 2011 State Homeland Security Grant Program.
Presenting the matter to the commissioners was Nolan County Sheriff David Warren, noting that the total cost would be around $21,000. These new radio systems would replace the aging units currently used by the county.
At the Monday meeting of the SEED (Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development) board, Executive Director Ken Becker offered a report on the occupancy rate for the local hotels.
The rate has seen an increase, in that a 66.7% occupancy rate was noted toward the end of 2012; hotels need around a 55% rate in order to maintain operations.
Thus, out of 604 hotel rooms, only 402 rooms were booked. Though the occupancy rate is high, rooms are still available even in the midst of continuous and incoming activity to the area.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 20 calls for service, issued three citations and made one arrest on Feb. 11, 2013.
The SPD received nine, 911 calls.

SONORA — Now that the Sweetwater girls are in the Class 3A playoffs, they’ve decided to stay awhile.
The Lady Mustangs on Tuesday guaranteed that their best season since 2005 will continue by grabbing a 58-43 bi-district win over Fort Stockton.
Sweetwater, now 21-14 for the season, will take on Lubbock Cooper in the area playoffs later this week. At press time, the teams had tentatively agreed to play at Post on Friday.
Nothing has come easy for the Lady Mustangs over the past month during their run to the postseason, and Tuesday’s game wasn’t exactly a cakewalk either.
The Sweetwater boys basketball team finished 2-8 in district play and 13-15 overall after losing to Midland Greenwood, 72-57, here on Tuesday.
Sweetwater got a game-high 21 points from Kaleb Hoover, but no one else reached double figures. Dylan Bennett scored nine points, Rhett Torres eight, Deandre Gatson seven, Isaiah McGee five, J.P. Poe three and Cole Maxwell and Sean Morrow two.
Maxwell and Morrow are the team’s only seniors.

Residents living in and around the Sweetwater community can be screened to reduce their risk of having a stroke or bone fracture. First United Methodist Church, located at 309 Cedar Street in Sweetwater, will host Life Line Screening on Saturday.
Heino Erichsen from The Woodlands participated in a Life Line Screening event in January of 2009 and learned that he had an abdominal aortic aneurism and a blockage of his carotid artery. He writes, "Thank you for saving my life!"

Local Girl Scout Troops have been supporting the deployed troops overseas.
All donations collected at the booth cookie sales are going towards buying cookies to be shipped out of Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene, to then be shipped to troops overseas. Those who want to support the Girl Scouts and deployed troops can buy cookies and make a donation at booth sales.
An 18-wheeler carrying boxes of Angry Bird gummie candies wrecked on the West Interchange on Interstate 20 Tuesday morning.
Many of the sweet treats were spread across I-20, opened from hundreds of pouches, thrown out of their packaged boxes from the wreck.
The cause of the wreck is unknown. The road was wet from a slight drizzle.
During the Nolan County Commissioners meeting on Monday, approval was given to pay for the scanning of 62 deed record books to the company Scantiva from the records management fund.
According to Pat McGowan, the county clerk, 36,977 images were scanned. The county has been utilizing the work of Scantiva for some time, continuing with the recently completed work of the 62 books being digitized.
A fifty-percent discount was given to the county, bringing the fee to around $6,000. At this time, the records management fund has around $36,000 available.
