Plowgirls to tip off playoffs vs. S-City

It’s playoff season.
Nolan County is being represented by three girls basketball teams this year, and Roscoe will get things started today.
The Plowgirls (18-11) face Sterling City (16-11) in a Class 1A, Division II bi-district playoff at 6:30 p.m. at Winters.
Roscoe is one of two Nolan County teams — Highland being the other — to advance from District 13-A, Division II.

Roscoe girls begin playoffs Monday

The Roscoe Collegiate girls basketball team will face Sterling City in a Class 1A, Division II bi-district playoff matchup at 6:30 p.m. Monday in Winters.
The members of this year’s team, pictured from left, are Stina Tomlin, Mirian Solis, Kendall Moses, Shelby Brown, Faith Boren, Carolina Perez, Torrey Willman, Eva Aguayo and Whitney Williams.
Kelly Jo Sexton serves as Roscoe’s head coach with Jonathan McClure and Shella Arnwine the assistant coaches.
Roscoe qualified for the playoffs as the District 13-A, Division II runnerup with a 7-3 record and has an overall season record of 18-11.

Treadmill Walkathon set to begin Feb. 22

For the second year in a row, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) will be hosting a 24-hour Treadmill Walkathon. The hospital announced that the event is scheduled to kickoff at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 22 and run through 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 23, at the hospital’s Cardiac Rehab Center.
As cardiovascular disease continues to be the leading cause of death in the United States, RPMH continues to raise awareness of cardiovascular diseases through community events such as the walkathon.

The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce and Crane Service Inc. have installed Sweetwater's new welcome signs on Interstate 20 at the east and west main exits. Installation began on Thursday, as Crane Services put the blades into place. Creative Graphic Solutions will be creating the blade wrap that will say, "Welcome to Sweetwater — Wind energy capital of North America."

Jaycees assist with fire clean-up

On Saturday, members of the Sweetwater Jaycees helped to clean up the home of Sweetwater Police Officer Armando Renteria, his wife, Andrea, a local teacher, and their family. Their house burned in a fire on Tuesday evening. Jaycees loaded items to be taken to the landfill.
A benefit account has been set up at Sweetwater Regional Federal Credit Union, located at 1900 Preston Road in Sweetwater, for the family. The Renterias lost all of their belongings and their home to the fire on the 100 block of Ash Street in Roscoe.

Marian (Weddle) Tiehen

Marian (Weddle) Tiehen, 92, passed peacefully from this world with a joyful heart and spirit on Feb. 8, 2013.
Marian blessed her family with love, encouragement, excellence and her rugged spirit. Marian was born in Falls City, Nebraska on Aug. 23, 1920 to Calvin “Cal” and Anna (Armbruster) Weddle. Marian and her brothers and sister grew up in Falls City and graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic Academy. In 1939, she graduated from Nebraska State Teachers College in Peru, Nebraska.

Honk Rally planned for Lady Mustangs

There will be a Honk Rally for the Sweetwater Lady Mustangs basketball team on Tuesday at 3 p.m. The team will travel from the Sweetwater High School gym to 12th Street, then to Elm Street, on to Broadway to Lamar Street and then to Highway 70.

Playoffs at last!

SAN ANGELO — The wait is over.
After eight long years, Sweetwater is finally sending a girls basketball team to the playoffs.
And boy, did they have to battle and scrap hard to earn it on Friday against a Big Spring squad that put up a valiant fight right to the bitter end.
After trailing nearly the entire game, Sweetwater launched a 9-2 run in the fourth quarter — capped by Suede Shirley’s go-ahead 3-pointer with 48.2 seconds left — to take a 41-38 lead in the teams’ District 4-3A third-place tiebreaker at San Angelo Lake View.

‘Stangs lose at B-Spring

BIG SPRING — The Sweetwater boys fell to 2-7 in district play after losing at Big Spring, 74-54, on Friday.
Dylan Bennett had 19 points and Kaleb Hoov-er 14 for Sweetwater, which trailed by only six (29-23) at halftime.
But Big Spring (4-5) blew the game open by outscoring Sweetwater 31-12 in the third quarter.
Rhett Torres had eight points, Isaiah McGee five, Deandre Gatson and Michael Hunt three and Quentin Wetsel two for Sweetwater.
The Mustangs will host Greenwood in their final game on Tuesday.
