Round-Up brings in over 2K pounds of rattlesnakes

Awards given for several contests at the Round-Up

Thousands attended the 55th Annual Sweetwater Jaycees World's Largest Rattlesnake Round-Up.
The total pounds of Western Diamondback Rattlesnake weighed totaled 2,361 pounds, an increase from last year's total of 1,664 pounds. Those bringing in the most pounds of rattlesnake were first place Andy Lee with 382 pounds, second place Herbert Hoover with 223 pounds, third place the Cliffseekers with 221 pounds, fourth place Bill Stinson with 136 pounds and fifth place Eric Timaeus with 216 pounds. The longest rattlesnake was caught by Daryl and Kathleen McIntire and measured 78 inches long.

Graveside services for Gerald Liston, 72, of Sweetwater, will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 14, 2013, at Sweetwater Cemetery. Interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Liston died Sunday, March 10, 2013, in Sweetwater.

Clifford E. Hilley

March 11, 2013

Funeral services for Clifford E. Hilley, 72, of Sweetwater, will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, 2013, at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Rev. Ward Hayes officiating. Interment will follow at Roscoe Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Hilley died Sunday, March 10, 2013 at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.
He was born May 20, 1940 in Visalia, Calif. He married Sandra Kay Norton on Nov. 24, 1975, in Lovington, N.M.

Rev. Orvel E. Brantley

Funeral services for Rev. Orvel E. Brantley, 89, of Abilene and formerly of Sweetwater, will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at Lamar Street Baptist Church with Rev. Tom Cox and Rev. Keith Clifton officiating. Interment will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery, under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 12 2013, at McCoy Funeral Home, located at 401 E. Third Street in Sweetwater.
Brantley died Sunday, March 10, 2013, at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.

Mary L. Kirk

Funeral services for Mary L. Kirk, 88, of Sweetwater, will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 13, 1013, at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Rev. Brian Brownlow officiating. A graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. at Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Abilene and interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 12, at McCoy Funeral Home, located at 401 East Third Street in Sweetwater.
Kirk died Friday, March 8, 2013, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital in Sweetwater.

‘Stangs play at home after AISD tourney

Sweetwater sought a win at home against Andrews at noon today after playing — and losing — all four games at the Abilene ISD baseball tournament that ended on Saturday.

SW captures medals as Relays make return

Sweetwater athletes made a strong showing Friday at the high school track field when they hosted their Rattlesnake Relays for the first time in several years.
The Sweetwater boys and girls both placed second to San Angelo Central in the team standings, with the boys scoring 131 points and the girls 101. Central’s boys and girls scored 192 and 226 points, respectively.
The Sweetwater boys won a total of seven events, with both Nick Nemir and Kaleb Hoover winning twice.
