Dove wins TNB framed print

March 14, 2013

Stacy Dove was the winner of the Texas National Bank Chamber Coffee door prize. The bank provided the prize, a 30" x 25" framed print that commemorates Texas' battle for independence.
The bank and its employees are proud of their Texas heritage and host the Chamber Coffee at the beginning of March each year in recognition of Texas Independence Day.

Senior Interview Day planned for April

During Monday morning’s SEED (Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development) board of directors’ meeting, one update offered information on various upcoming events that the economic development group will be involved with.
Kirstin Smith, the Asst. Marketing/Admin. Director, stated that in a little over a month, Senior Interview Day will be conducted on Tuesday, April 23 and Wednesday, April 24. Volunteers are needed to interview the students, and board members can either take part themselves or send a representative from their business to attend.

Bennie Wheels to return to Sweetwater this month

Step back in time with Bennie Wheels, Johnny Cash tribute artist, at the Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium on Saturday, March 30 at 7:30 p.m. and enjoy classic Johnny Cash hits that are still loved today by all generations. 
He not only offers a sound and look comparable to Cash. His wife, Renee, also looks and sounds like June Carter Cash, and she will perform alongside her husband as she has on the Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium stage before.

City prepares for election

With the city election coming up on Saturday, May 11, approval was given at Tuesday's Sweetwater City Commission meeting for the appointment of election judges and alternate judges.
They will be Kevin Shipp and Jim Kelley (Precinct 1), Ada Belle Clark and Rhea Hendrix (Precinct 2), Barbara Baker and Chris Stephens (Precinct 3) and Ann McCarthy and Olga Balderas (Precinct 4).

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 43 calls for service, issued two citations and made one arrest on Mar. 12, 2013.

The SPD received 14, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Theft — 1100 block of E. Broadway.

Arrested by SPD:
• Female juvenile, 15 — Runaway.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had eight calls for service, served two civil papers and made one arrest on Mar. 12, 2013.

Arrested by DPS:
• Jessica Lynne Hallford, 27, of Abilene — Driving while intoxicated.

Calls for service:
• Reckless driver — I-20 MM 261 west bound.

Dorothy Galloway

Graveside services for Dorothy Anola Galloway, 92, of Kingwood, Texas formerly of Sweetwater, will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 16, 2013, at Sweetwater Cemetery. Rev. Brian Brownlow will officiate with interment to follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Galloway died Thursday, March 14, 2013, at Regent Care Center in Kingwood.

Tennis action

Sweetwater High School tennis player Zac Bax makes a face while hitting a return.
Bax and Bryan Vause teamed up for a second-place finish in boys ‘A’ doubles at Brownwood while Michael Redondo and Brandon Howell teamed up to win consolation in boys ‘B’ doubles.
Also, Tyler Stacy was second in boys ‘C’ singles at Brownwood and Victoria Carly was second in girls ‘C’ singles.

State powerlifters

Alexis Thompson and Ashley Lara of Sweetwater will compete at the girls state powerlifting meet on Saturday after both of them placed second at regionals. The state meet will be in Corpus Christi.
Thompson lifted a total of 515 pounds to finish second in the 114-pound class at the regional meet in Fort Stockton. Lara lifted a total of 630 pounds in the 198-pound class.
Both are making their first trip to the state meet for Sweetwater.
Donald Baker of Sweet-water will compete at the boys state meet to be held March 23 in Abilene. He will be competing in the 148-pound weight class.

JV athletes compete at Rattlesnake Relays

Sweetwater had a number of JV athletes compete at its Rattlesnake Relays meet this past Thursday.
The JV boys scored 139 points to finish second to San Angelo Central’s 234.
Jonathan Browning won three events as he placed first in the 100 dash (11.16), triple jump (38-5 1/2) and and high jump (6-0), while Deshaun Williams won the long jump (18-8 1/2).
Browning and Williams were also on the Mustangs’ first-place 400 relay (47.16), as were Marquees Jenkins and Austin Kamer.

Boys golfers at Seminole

The Sweetwater boys golf team shot a one-day 339 total to place fifth out of 20 teams at Seminole’s tourn-ament.
Alex Castillo (80) was 12th among medalists. Also on Sweetwater’s team were Michael Hunt (85), Mason Andrews (86), Mic-hael Hazard (88) and Mark Lawrence (112).
The next tournament for Sweetwater will be held in Lamesa on March 19.
