Nolan VFD to host pancake supper fundraiser

Seriously...who isn’t a fan of breakfast for supper? If you’re in the mood for the morning meal in the evening, you won’t have to wait too long.
On Saturday, March 23, the Nolan Volunteer Fire Department will be having a pancake supper fundraiser. The event will be held at the Nolan/Divide Community Center from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
There is no set cost for the meal, as donations will be accepted. All of the items used during the pancake supper will be donated by Dewayne Morgan, and 100% of the funds raised from the dinner will be used for the construction of a new fire station.

Ordinances help city prepare for anticipated oil activity

Various ordinances were discussed at the Sweetwater City Commission meeting on Tuesday. Many of the matters that have been and continue to be discussed are the result of the city making preparations for the anticipated activity from the Cline Shale oil development.
The second and final reading of the ordinance amending Chapter 19 of the city’s Code of Ordinances — entitled “Motor Vehicles and Traffic” — was approved, which prohibits the parking of recreational vehicles (RVs) in public streets, as well as other commercial and recreational equipment.

City ordinance for RV parks in the works

While no action was taken during Tuesday's city commission meeting, discussion was held on the criteria for a proposed RV (recreational vehicle) park ordinance.
A third rendition of the ordinance draft was discussed, which defines what classifies as an RV park, what an RV is and what amenities must be placed inside an RV park. Various other specifications were also noted, including individual utilities and hook-ups per vehicle.

Sisters advance in Bible Drill

First Baptist Church of Sweetwater recently held their Church Bible Drill during a prayer meeting. Brooklynn Petty (left), sixth grader, scored perfect and Justynne Petty (right), third grader, scored good. Both are daughters of Rolan and Leigh Petty of Sweetwater. They will advance to Network Bible Drill on Sunday March 24. Their leader is Natile Woodrow (center).

SISD elementary schools get security upgrades

Over the course of Spring Break this past week, the elementary campuses of Sweetwater ISD (Independent School District) received security upgrades, which will give parents and visitors a convenient way of requesting entry into the four schools.
The newly-installed security systems will now lock the front entrance doors of J.P. Cowen, Southeast, East Ridge and Sweetwater Intermediate schools. According to SISD administration, Sweetwater is the first school district within Region 14 to install a security system of this magnitude.

Sweetwater is one of 43 communities featured in the 2013 Texas Midwest Guide. The 18th edition of the annual publication is now in circulation in print as well as available as a free app from Amazon, Apple and Google app stores and online at www.texasmidwestguide.org. Printed copies are available at the chamber of commerce office.

Several dogs available for adoption at shelter

Sweetwater Animal Control currently has several dogs available for adoption.
Available for adoption are two male mixed breed dogs, one female mixed breed dog and two male mixed breed puppies.
According to Sweetwater’s animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.
The pets are required to have their vaccination before they leave to their new homes.

Students could be seen around town with their parents this week, enjoying a few days off from school during the Spring Break holiday. Many families took advantage of the warm weather and headed outdoors to places around Nolan County. Manafest tour concert coming to Sweetwater

The Manafest Spring Tour is coming to Sweetwater and will be playing at 7 p.m. on Monday at the Municipal Auditorium.
The tour will be bringing in internationally known rock and rap artist Manafest, Superchick lead singer Tricia Brock, Je’Kob and David Dunn.
Manafest is a very well known artist within the Christian rock and rap world. His music can be heard on local radio stations such as Air 1, and the tour coming through Sweetwater is expected to be a great thing for young people in the community.
