Esteban M. Torrez, age 90, of Sweetwater, passed away on Monday, March 18, 2013 at Hendrick Medical Center.
A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 21, 2013 at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel.
Holy Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 22, 2013, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Rev. Charles Okonkwo officiating. Burial will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery with the Nolan County Honor Guard. Arrangements under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
The 2011-12 Sweetwater High School softball team was honored prior to Fridayâ€™s District 4-3A opener against Snyder for becoming the first team to make the playoffs in 15 years.

Sweetwater High School athletes Ashley Lara and Alexis Thompson competed at the Class 3A girls state powerlifting meet that was held in Corpus Christi this past weekend. Both were making their first state ap-pearance.
Lara lifted a total of 620 pounds in the three categories â€” squat, bench press and dead lift â€” to place 14th in the 198-pound division while Thompson lifted a total of 520 pounds in the 114-pound weight division to place 19th.

SNYDER, Texas (AP) â€” Investigators are trying to identify a badly decomposed body found in West Texas.
The Texas Department of Public Safety says law officers Sunday removed the remains from an undisclosed location in Scurry County near Snyder. Trooper Sparky Dean says further details on the site have not been made public as investigators seek to preserve the scene.
A person whose name hasn't been released reported finding the remains Saturday afternoon. Officials have not said the possible gender or age of the person. Dean says an autopsy has been ordered.
The Destination Imagination team from Sweetwater Intermediate School â€” as winners at the Northwest Plains DI competition â€” will join approximately 300 Texas Destination Imagination regional winners at the affiliate tournament.
A public hearing was held during the regular March meeting of the Sweetwater City Commission to consider the request for the abandonment and closure of a right-of-way.
The right-of-way is a twelve-and-a-half foot by 482.6 foot platted but undeveloped dead-end alley located between Bowie and Henderson Streets (west to east) and west Bradford Lane (north to south). Numerous portions of streets and alleys are already closed in this area.
At the March meeting of the Sweetwater City Commission meeting, several bids were discussed on items that are necessary for city operations.
Bids were opened and considered on AC10 asphalt and grade 4 crushed rock, which will be used in the 2013 street seal coating projects. Three companies submitted bids, which were reviewed by city staff prior to any action being taken.
Lota Bell Smauley Gent, 93, of Garland, went to be with her Lord and her loved ones on March 17, 2013, at Town East Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Mesquite.
Lota Bell was born on Feb. 2, 1920. in Fisher County to Ottis and Ida Mae Smauley. Her family grew up on a farm west of Roby, where she was one of seven children. She married Cecil Gent on May 10, 1944. He preceded her in death on April 23, 1993.
