Boys golfers at Andrews event

Three members of the Sweetwater High School boys golf team competed at the Andrews tournament this past week.
Alex Castil-lo shot 79-79-158; Michael Hunt shot 83-92-175; and Mark Lawrence shot 118-106-224.

Medical attention important after snakebite

Each year, the World’s Largest Rattlesnake Round-Up attracts more than 20,000 visitors to Sweetwater. For the past 55 years, the event has been a means for locals to protect livestock by controlling the snake population as they begin to emerge from winter hibernation.
As participants and visitors participate in the Round-up, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) seeks to raise awareness of how people should respond to snakebites during the weekend and throughout the year.

Local woman and her dog die in house fire

A Sweetwater woman and her dog perished in a fire on the 1900 block of Bristol Street on Monday afternoon, according to Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden.
According to Madden, the Sweetwater Fire Department received the initial call about the fire just after 3:30 p.m. on Monday.

WETS sponsors NCUW Rattlesnake Round-Up gun raffle

Nolan County United Way's 2013 Rattlesnake Round-up gun raffle will benefit the nine local agencies assisted by NCUW including Big Country Medical Reserve Corp, Boy Scouts, Cancer Services Network, Gateway Family Services, Girl Scouts, Senior Nutrition Activities Program (SNAP), Sweetwater Back Pack Buddies, West Texas Children's Advocacy Center and the Women's Resource Center.
Raffle prizes include three Savage Axis XP's ~ Camo- Rifle/Scope Packages with one 22-250, one 243 and one 270.

TNB to host Chamber Coffee

Texas National Bank will host the monthly Chamber of Commerce Coffee and belatedly celebrate Texas Independence Day at 10 a.m. on Wednesday in the bank’s lobby at 400 East Broadway.
Guests will be invited to enter a drawing for a framed Texas flag print to be given away at the conclusion of the coffee.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 149 calls for service, issued 15 citations and made eight arrests from March 1-3, 2013.

The SPD received 83, 911 calls.

• Burglary of a building — 200 block of SE Georgia.

Arrested by SPD:
• Byron Blueford, 25 — Warrant.
• Stacy Bennett, 43 — Public intoxication.

Neva Francine Cole

Neva Francine Cole, age 61, of Sweetwater, passed away on Monday, March 4, 2013 at her residence.
Her body will be cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
Neva was born on August 27, 1951 in Newman, Calif. to William Howard, Jr. and Rita (Vaughn) Howard. She was a homemaker and a member of the Jaycee Roosters.

Harmon Gene Hurst

Funeral services for Harmon Gene Hurst, 83, of Abilene, formerly of Sweetwater, will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 7, 2013 at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Rev. Keith Clifton officiating. Interment will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Family will receive friends from 1:15 p.m. until service time on Thursday, March 7, at McCoy Chapel of Memories, located at 401 East Third Street in Sweetwater.
Hurst died Monday, March 4, 2013 at Mesa Springs Retirement Center in Abilene.

Softball team is 3rd at B-Spring tourney

The Sweetwater softball team was 4-3 at Big Spring’s recent tournament. Sweetwater (13-8) was third in the Silver bracket, beating Colorado City and Lamesa, plus Westbrook and Jim Ned in pool play.
Against Colorado City, both Suede Shirley and Abby Garcia hit inside-the-park home runs to highlight an 11-6 win, while pitcher Maty Montgomery allowed just one hit in the team’s 6-1 win over Lamesa.
