House a total loss after blaze

A fire consumed a home on Adrian Road, just south of Interstate 20 in Nolan County on Monday afternoon, as firefighters tried to extinguish the blaze. According to authorities, the home was a total loss. A lack of manpower and water was a contributing factor to the loss. Assisting with the fire were the Sweetwater fire Department, Trent Volunteer Fire Department, Lake Sweetwater Volunteer Fire Department, Merkel Volunteer Fire Department, Nolan Volunteer Fire Department and the Nolan County Sheriff's Office.

First readings held on three ordinances

At the April meeting of the Sweetwater City Commission, approval was given toward the first reading of three ordinances that are slated for adoption.
The first ordinance amends Chapter 17 of the Code of Ordinances entitled "Licenses and Business Regulations", which deals with RV (recreational vehicle) parks and their equal development.

Sweetwater represented in Austin

Legislative issues in Austin were recently being addressed by Sweetwater-friendly supporters. Cline Shale Alliance meeting held in Sweetwater

The quarterly Cline Shale Alliance luncheon was held on Friday at the Sweetwater campus of Texas State Technical College, as a full house gathered to learn more about the oil exploration and development.
The keynote speaker of the event was Ronald Wade, President and CEO of Trail Ridge Exploration and Production LLC.
The Grapevine-based company is working on the eastern side of Scurry County, though they are currently still in the exploratory phase. However, the presentation examined other oil plays while looking toward the Cline Shale.

Polly Wright

Polly Wright, 78, passed away April 14, 2013 in Tulsa, Okla. Funeral services for Polly will be Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at Broadway Baptist Church in Sweetwater, with Pastor Wayne Taylor officiating and assisting will be Pastor Chris Stephens and Pastor James Baker. Interment will follow services at Sweetwater Cemetery. Family visitation will be Tuesday, April 16, 2013, from 6-8 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home.

Bill Kennedy died peacefully in his sleep, Monday, April 15, at his home in Sweetwater after a short illness. Bill was 88 years old.

Melissa Haygood Jacks

GRANBURY — Melissa Haygood Jacks, 56, of Granbury, passed from this life to her great reward in Heaven, on April 14, 2013 in her home in Granbury, surrounded by her family.
Service will take place at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 17, 2013, at Stonewater Church in Granbury.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at Deleon Cemetery in Deleon, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to fund mission trips with Stonewater Church of Granbury.

Blackwell will host area meet on Wednesday

Blackwell High School will host an area track meet for both District 13-1A and 14-1A Wednesday.
Blackwell competes in District 14-1A while Roscoe and Highland are both in District 13-1A. The top four finishers in each event at last week’s district meets advanced to the area meet, where the top four finishers in each event Wednesday will advance to the Region II-1A, Division II meet to be held April 26-27 at Angelo State University.

‘Stangs can clinch berth at Monahans

Sweetwater High School’s baseball team last made the playoffs in 2004. With a win tonight at Monahans — or a Snyder loss to district co-leader Wylie — the Mus-tangs will clinch a berth.
Sweetwater (6-1 district, 14-11 overall) is currently tied with Wylie for the district lead with three games left. The Mustangs have won their last three contests heading into today’s game at Monahans (1-6) since losing to Wylie on March 28, and also won its first game with Monahans 11-1 on March 26 in Sweetwater. Wylie and Sweetwater are two games ahead of Big Spring (4-3), with Snyder sitting at 3-4.

JV track boys rack up points at district meet

Sweetwater High School’s junior varsity boys track team scored 145 points at last week’s district meet to finish just two points out of first place. Individual winners were Deshaun Williams in the long jump, Marquees Jenkins in the 200, Mark Lawrence in the 800, Max Nemir in the 300 hurdles and Kaegan Jeffrey in the discus. Lawrence, Nemir, Jenkins and Max Gomez ran on the first-place 400 relay and Williams, Jenkins, Gomez and Austin Kamer on the 800 relay, while Jenkins, Gomez, Williams and Nemir were on the 400 relay that placed second.
