BHS student named ‘Best in Texas’

BreAnne Richardson, FCCLA member at Blackwell High School, was recently named the Best of Texas Outstanding Special Achievement Student by the Texas Career and Technology Council (TCTC). This state-wide award is in recognition of the student’s achievements, academics, service and participation during high school.

Bond election set for STEM Research Center in Roscoe

On Saturday, May 11, registered voters in Roscoe have the opportunity to head to the polls to cast their vote in a bond election approved by the Roscoe Collegiate Independent School District (RCISD) Board of Trustees for the construction of a $3.5 million Capstone Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Research Center.
Regular voting will take place on Saturday, May 11 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the RCISD Cafetorium, located at 1201 West 7th Street in Roscoe.

SHS softball team gets historic win

April 29, 2013

The Sweetwater High School softball team won its first bi-district championship ever by beating Pecos, 11-1, on Saturday in five innings. The Lady Mustangs will now advance to take on Pampa in the area playoffs this week.
The players on this year's team are Abby Garcia, Lena Lovelady, Shaneese Brown, Cierra Knox, Jerren Villa, Suede Shirley, Kendra Crosson, Keyli Turner, Maty Montgomery, Kelsi Crosson, Alyssa Heredia, Morgan Gomez, Megan Holsey and Jaya Atkins.

IBAT celebrates Financial Literacy Month in April

April is National Financial Literacy Month, and the Independent Bankers Association of Texas (IBAT) encourages parents to use this opportunity to teach their children the importance of financial literacy. IBAT recently announced the three recipients of its Teaching Excellence in Financial Literacy Award—Skylar Houston from Sweetwater High School, Lynn Scotty from Utopia High School and Linda Comer from Wellington High School.

SHS seniors honored at AVID dinner

As the clock winds down to graduation, Sweetwater High School (SHS) seniors were honored during Thursday night's AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Dinner Celebration held at the SHS cafeteria.
AVID is a national college-readiness program that is designed to increase the number of students who not only enroll but persevere in a four-year college or university.

Eva Crouch Rainey, 93, passed away on Sunday, April 28, 2013 in Sweetwater.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30, at Garden of Memories with Rev. Keith Clifton officiating. Visitation will be held Monday, April 29, from 6-7:30 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home. Services will be under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.

Lady Mustangs crush Pecos 11-1

WOLFFORTH — Sweet-water’s 2013 softball team just keeps rewriting history.
The Lady Mustangs (21-13) — who were already the first softball team in the 17-year history of Sweet-water’s program to record 20 wins — added another historical footnote Saturday when they routed Pecos, 11-1, in five innings for their first playoff win ever.
“We wanted it pretty bad,” said senior pitcher Maty Montgomery, who allowed just four hits and struck out three to get the victory. “It feels good.”

Nemir hopes to climb final hurdle at state

LUBBOCK — The third time for Nick Nemir might be the charm.
The Sweetwater High School senior, who competed in three events this weekend at the Region I-3A track meet at Texas Tech University, will find out later today if his third-place showing Saturday in the boys 300-meter hurdles is good enough to earn him a ticket to Austin for the state meet May 10-11.

Five athletes, one relay headed to Austin in II-A

SAN ANGELO — Many of the Highland girls who went to Austin two months ago for the Lady Hornet basketball team’s first-ever state tournament appearance are going back to represent their school at the state track meet.
Also making the trip wil be two Highland boys and a pair of Blackwell athletes — one girl and one boy. In all, the two schools captured eight medals — representing the work of five individual athletes and one relay — at the Region II-1A, Division II meet held this past weekend at Angelo State University.

Duo vaults to Austin on opening day of regionals

SAN ANGELO — Athletes from Blackwell and High-land claimed the top three spots in the boys pole vault on Friday’s opening day of the Region II-1A, Division II track meet, and all three of them may go to state.
Blackwell’s Jayden Jones, who won the event with a leap of 13 feet, one inch, and Highland’s Michael Hyde — who was second with a leap of 12-9 — are assured of a trip to Austin for the state meet that will be held on May 10-11. However, Blackwell’s Mason Magness may join them after he fin-ished third on Friday with a leap of 12-3.
