The Lady Mustangs (21-13) — who were already the first softball team in the 17-year history of Sweet-water’s program to record 20 wins — added another historical footnote Saturday when they routed Pecos, 11-1, in five innings for their first playoff win ever.
“We wanted it pretty bad,” said senior pitcher Maty Montgomery, who allowed just four hits and struck out three to get the victory. “It feels good.”

The Sweetwater High School senior, who competed in three events this weekend at the Region I-3A track meet at Texas Tech University, will find out later today if his third-place showing Saturday in the boys 300-meter hurdles is good enough to earn him a ticket to Austin for the state meet May 10-11.
SAN ANGELO — Many of the Highland girls who went to Austin two months ago for the Lady Hornet basketball team’s first-ever state tournament appearance are going back to represent their school at the state track meet.
Also making the trip wil be two Highland boys and a pair of Blackwell athletes — one girl and one boy. SAN ANGELO — Athletes from Blackwell and High-land claimed the top three spots in the boys pole vault on Friday’s opening day of the Region II-1A, Division II track meet, and all three of them may go to state.

The final night of the 2013 regular season Friday was an eventful one for Sweet-water’s baseball team.
It began with hopes for an outright district championship — hopes that were dashed when the Mustangs were defeated 11-5 by Snyder at Sportsman’s Park.
However, Sweetwater still claimed a piece of the Dis-trict 4-3A crown thanks to some help from Big Spring, which won 5-3 over Wylie. But the Bulldogs get the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye after beating Sweetwater in both head-to-head games.
