Poe’s pitching silences G’wood

GREENWOOD — They haven’t been dominant lately, but Sweetwater High School’s baseball team is winning the close games — by getting clutch hits along with some great pitching.
Tuesday’s 1-0 road vic-ory at Midland Greenwood — keeping Sweetwater in a first-place tie with Wylie at 5-1 — was the Mustangs’ second straight one-run win and third in district play.

GREENWOOD — After dropping out of first place with a 10-0 loss to Snyder, Sweetwater’s softball team got back on track Tuesday by getting 17 hits and scoring 11 runs in the last two innings of a 13-3, run-rule win at Midland Greenwood.
Sweetwater (5-2) stayed a game behind Snyder, which improved to 6-1 in district with an 8-1 win over Big Spring (4-3). Sweetwater, which is closing in on a second straight playoff berth, will play host Friday to Big Spring at 5 p.m.

WTCAC banquet focuses on the importance of investing in our children

Law enforcement, leaders in the community and volunteers who want to make a difference in children’s lives came together Tuesday night to support the West Texas Children’s Advocacy Center (WTCAC) during their annual Child Abuse Awareness Banquet held at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex.
The original speaker was unable to attend at the last minute, but Assistant District Attorney Barrett Thomas and WTCAC Executive Director Teresa Zarate filled in to talk to those in attendance about the difference WTCAC makes in the community and express appreciation for community support.

Mayor asks community to pray for rain

Sweetwater Mayor Greg Wortham is encouraging citizens to join him this Sunday in praying for much-needed rain.
At the Sweetwater City Commission meeting on Tuesday morning at City Hall, Mayor Wortham read a proclamation in which he is declaring Sunday as "A Day of Prayer for Rain".
The document outlined the need of rain within West Texas, which has been proven by the low lake levels. Additionally, the lack of rain has shown to be a fire hazard as wildfires have resulted in the area.

Public access TV station being considered by city

The City of Sweetwater is considering the development of a public access television station with some outside help, as discussion on the topic was held during Tuesday's city commission meeting.
Approval was given to allow City Manager Eddie Brown to negotiate an interlocal agreement with the local branch of Texas State Technical College (TSTC) for the TV station's establishment. Funding for the station would come from the "PEG" portion of the Cable Franchise "rental" payments--from funds already collected as well as future payments.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 69 calls for service, issued 16 citations and made one arrest on April 8, 2013.

The SPD received 39, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Theft — 600 block of James.
• Prowler — 500 block of Wall.
• Prowler — 900 block of Lamar.
• Theft — 900 block of Lamar.
• Stalking — Sweetwater area.
• Burglary of a building — 1100 block of Lamar.

Arrested by SPD:
• Ashley Diggs, 29 — Warrants.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had four calls for service, served four civil papers and made one arrest on April 8, 2013.

Taste of Sweetwater raises money for Meals on Wheels

The community of Sweetwater once again stepped to the plate to help those in need. The Nolan County Senior Nutrition Activities Program (SNAP), held the 27th Annual Taste of Sweetwater at the Nolan County Coliseum annex building.
Twenty-five local food establishments participated in this year’s event, with all types of food represented. According to SNAP director, Tonya Challis, the crowd numbered at about 400 and helped to raise about $4,918 for the non-profit organization, which included $1,142 raised from the quilt drawing. The quilt was made by SNAP participant Patsy Frith.

Roscoe welcomes Burritos Zacatecas

The City of Roscoe recently welcomed Burritos Zacatecas to town with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Many members of the community showed their support at the event.
