Local Girl Scout to throw first pitch at Texas Rangers game

Brownie Girl Scout Luz Cano will have the opportunity of a lifetime when she throws out the first pitch at the Texas Rangers vs. Los Angeles Angels game on Sunday, April 7. The lucky second grader from Blackwell was chosen out of thousands of girls from across the Girl Scouts of Texas Oklahoma Plains council.
“Luz will turn eight on April 12, so this is a wonderful early birthday present,” said Norma Cano, Luz’s mom and troop co-leader. “We are big baseball fans and this will be our first time attending a professional baseball game.”

Demolition begins at McDonald’s

Demolition of the McDonald’s restaurant in Sweetwater began this week with the large playland toy coming down.
The new McDonald's is planning to have a new indoor toddler play area and games for children. The restaurant closed on March 31 and plans are to re-open in July or early August.

TSTC West Texas, industry partners create specialty oil and gas certificate

TSTC West Texas will be offering a new specialty certificate this fall, Downhole Tool Technician, pending approval from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Downhole Tool Technicians are in-demand locally due to the recent Cline Shale activity, as well as across Texas as shale operations continues to increase. According to a recent article in Forbes magazine, Texas today produces roughly 30% of the US natural gas and roughly 30% of US oil production. With the Cline Shale booming in West Texas, industry has expressed the need for qualified, trained technicians.

Camp Courage offers healing and hope for children suffering loss

Dealing with loss can be difficult for anyone, but children can find it especially challenging. Hendrick Hospice Care’s Camp Courage offers a place of healing and hope for area children suffering a loss of a loved one through death, divorce or other painful transition. Registration is now open for the camp scheduled for Saturday, June 1 through Tuesday, June 4. The camp is offered for third through 12th graders and is held in Lueders.

The SPD received 17, 911 calls.

Scharlos Jo Monks

Scharlos Jo Monks passed from this life April 4, 2013 at the age of 83 in a Sweetwater hospital. She was a long time resident of both Colorado City and Sweetwater.
Services will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday April 6, 2013 at 4th and Elm Church of Christ with Michael Crowley and Jerry Turner officiating. Burial will follow in the Colorado City Cemetery.

Local athletes will have busy weekend full of district action

Athletes in softball, base-ball, golf and tennis see district action for Sweetwater today, while Highland will be hosting a pre-district meet which Roscoe and Blackwell will also attend.
And that will be just the start of very busy weekend for Nolan County athletes as district golf and tennis are also on tap Saturday, plus the junior high teams’ season-ending district meet.

SW visits Snyder for key 4-3A games as seasons resume

Sweetwater’s softball and baseball teams go to Snyder for key District 4-3A games when they return from a seven-day break today.
The action begins with Sweetwater and Snyder battling for the outright 4-3A lead in the softball race at 5 p.m. Both have 4-1 records and a one-game lead over two teams after the first half of district play. Right behind are Greenwood and Big Spring, each at 3-2. Sweetwater beat Snyder, 11-8, when the teams began district play on March 15 at Sweetwater. The Lady Mus-tangs’ only district loss has been against Greenwood.

Hoover named All-BC

Kaleb Hoover of Sweet-water has been named to the Abilene Reporter-News All-Big Country boys bas-ketball team for Class 3A, while his Sweetwater teammate Dylan Bennett received honorable mention to the Class 3A boys team.
Hoover, a 6-1 junior for-ward, also made the team as a sophomore. He averaged 16.4 points and eight rebounds in earning first team all-district honors. Hoover as a sophomore was named the district newcomer of the year. This season, he shot 41 percent from the field and 61 percent at the line after getting a late start due to an injury.
