Registration continues for TSTC, Ludlum robotics camp

TSTC (Texas State Technical College) and Ludlum Measurements are presenting a Summer Robotics Camp from June 3-6, 2013 at The Center on the TSTC Sweetwater campus for students entering grades four through seven.
Participants can experience the wonder and excitement of designing and programming robots in a collegial environment, while also choosing to experience other fun activities that include art, math, medicine or technology.
Sessions are broken into half-day and full-day camps so that students can select the best choice for them. Everyone will receive a free t-shirt and goodie bag.

Courthouse work continues

Construction at the Nolan County Courthouse has been steady since work began on Monday, May 6.
The work is being done by Turner Construction, a San-Antonio based company, as the façade of the courthouse will be completely reconstructed. At least two entries will remain open throughout the duration of the construction, which is expected to be completed sometime this fall.

Law Enforcement Week recognized by city commission

At the Sweetwater City Commission meeting on Tuesday morning, recognition was given toward the state's proclamation of May 12-18, 2013 as Law Enforcement Week.
A proclamation from Texas Governor Rick Perry was read by Mayor Greg Wortham, which praised the men and women who dedicate their lives to protect the public through their heroic actions. This week allows for an annual tribute to fallen heroes, in which all of Texas is invited to honor those who lay down their lives for others.

Future Sweetwater class graduates

This year's Future Sweetwater participants — made up of Sweetwater High School sophomores — graduated on Wednesday evening with a dinner and ceremony at Texas State Technical College.

Emily Beene Jones

Emily Beene Jones, 69, of Rowlett (formerly of Roby) passed away March 9, 2013, and was cremated.
A memorial service will be held 4 p.m. Saturday, May 18, at Trinity Baptist Church with Rev. Ward Hayes officiating.
Emily was born Oct. 24, 1943 in Lockney, Texas to Foy and Paulene Beene. She was raised in Roby most of her childhood, where her father was a cotton farmer, graduating from Roby High School. She was a past member of First Baptist Church in Roby.
Emily worked for the Meadows Foundation in Dallas for over 30 years, retiring as executive vice president.

SW-Andrews III may not be able to match first two

The Sweetwater baseball team has played its share of exciting games this season. Four of the Mustangs’ five postseason games — and all four victories — have been decided by two runs or less.
Two of the most drama-tic finishes came in March against Andrews, which will play Sweetwater in a best-of-3 regional quarterfinal starting with Game 1 Friday at Lubbock Christian Uni-versity’s Hays Field. In both cases, the visiting team had a big early lead, only to see the home team rally and pull out a walk-off victory in the final inning.

Top athletes at Highland and Blackwell recognized

Blackwell and Highland this week recognized top athletes from the past year.
Highland’s Lora Stewart and Ron Covington were the recipients of the Fighting Hornet award. Also, Hornet awards for the top girls athlete went to Stewart in cross country, Sierra Allen in basketball and Beth Richburg in track; and for the boys, Michael Hyde in football, Covington in basketball and Sheldon Hall in track.

SW summer sports camp schedule

A Lady Mustang Bas-ketball Camp will be held June 3-6 at the middle school gym on 305 Lamar Street. The camp is for students who have completed grades 2-8. Camp sessions will be from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $35 which in-cludes a T-shirt. Pre-regis-tration is appreciated.
A concession stand will be available. The camp’s goal is to improve players’ skills through instruction in individual skills and fun team competitions.
