The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce recently held a ribbon cutting for Amole Express, located at 2014 Lamar Street. Midwest Finance went all out during Paint the Town Purple Week to support Nolan County Relay For Life, celebrate cancer survivors and remember those who are no longer with us. The Mayor declared April 29, 2013 through May 4, 2013, as American Cancer Societyâs Paint the Town Purple Week. Midwest employees wore their purple on Friday and the business was decorated in purple.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Abilene District will begin a project May 6, to preserve area highways with seal coating.
More than 257 miles of state-maintained roadways are part of the districtâs 2013 seal coat program.Â Roadways in Nolan, Mitchell, Howard, Borden, Scurry, Fisher, Taylor, Callahan, Haskell, Jones, Stonewall and Shackelford counties will receive $7.9 million worth of preventive maintenance seal coat work.
Nolan County and the City of Sweetwater have a new emergency and mass notification provider. The transition from DeltAlert to the industry-leading, high-speed mass notification system, CodeREDÂ®, began earlier this year.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 35 calls for service, issued no citations and made two arrests on May 2, 2013.
The SPD received 23, 911 calls.

The Nolan County Sheriffâs Office (NCSO) had seven calls for service, five civil papers served and made no arrests on May 2, 2013.
BROADWAY BAPTIST CHURCH
There was a raging wild fire, and a photographer wanted to get some real good pictures of the fire, so he called the airport and set up a charter flight.Â The reservation was made, and he was told to be at the airport at 11 a.m. and a twin engine Cessna would be ready to take him over the fires.Â Being all excited about this great opportunity, he rushed to the airport, grabbed his camera from his bag, ran over to the plane, jumped in and told the pilot, âOkay, Iâm ready, Letâs go!â
Rounding out the Nolan County Forward Planning Committee meeting last week at the Sweetwater Country Club, the entities presented discussed their current initiatives while looking ahead to how the Cline Shale oil development will impact them.
The local TSTC (Texas State Technical College) West Texas campus is gearing up for a new program in the fall as studies involving the oil and gas industry are on the rise. The school has also been asked about programs regarding CDLs (commercial drivers' license).
The spring season typically bring in warm weather, flourishing flowers and a new start. So to bring in a fresh approach, the First United Methodist Church (FUMC) in Sweetwater, located at 301 Cedar Street, will be having a revival starting this Sunday, May 5 and running through Wednesday, May 8.
The guest speaker will be Wesley Putnam, a full-time evangelist who has been ministering over 30 years. The revival services start each night at 7 p.m. in the church sanctuary.
Highland Heights United Methodist Church recently consecrated a collection of items for the Samaritan Hospitality House located in Colorado City. It ministers to families who are visiting loved ones incarcerated in local prisons.
With a homelike atmosphere, the âHouseâ provides weekend lodging for family members during their stay free of charge. Congregational members are pictured above with consecrated items.
