Lehnert competes in National Spelling Bee today

(via @ScrippsBee) Round 3 and the Preliminaries of the 2013 National Spelling Bee concluded at 4:01 p.m. 239 spellers remained, but 41 semifinalists were announced. [Kara Lehnert did not make the cut.] Qualifying semifinalists had to correctly spell twice on stage, PLUS score highest on Tuesday's computer exams.

Many attend local flag raising ceremony

Those who gave all were remembered Monday at the Nolan County Memorial Day Flag Raising Ceremony on the south side of the Nolan County Courthouse.
Team Chip Tae Kwon Do leaders Lonnie Mendez, Amanda Martinez and Eric Martinez, assisted by Team Chip students, presented and raised the American flag. The Texas flag was presented and raised by Boatswain’s Mate Brittney Clark BMSN (SW).
Retired Sweetwater Police Chief Jim Kelley led the service as master of ceremonies. Nolan County Judge Tim Fambrough was the featured speaker.

SISD looks ahead to various activities

A few testing results were recently received by SISD (Sweetwater Independent School District), which were announced during the May meeting of the SISD Board of Trustees. In retakes for the TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) tests, there was a 92% passing rate in English/Language Art, an 81% passing rate in Math, a 96% passing rate in Social Studies and a 94% passing rate in Science.

Mary Peterson

Mary McCrohan Peterson was born May 30, 1923, to Jack and Mary McCrohan of Maxwell, New Mexico. She grew up in Laramie, Wyoming and was a member of the 1945 graduating class of the University of Wyoming with a major in education, specialty in mathematics. Her vocation was education, teaching high school mathematics in Wyoming, Maryland and California before retiring in 1985 after 40 years in the classroom.
Mary wed Charles Peterson in Laramie on March 16, 1950. They were wed 40 years until his passing in 1990.
Mary’s life ended on May 27, 2013 in Abilene, Texas.

Betty Lou Fesperman

Betty Lou Fesperman, 78, of Blackwell died Monday, May 27, 2013, at her home.
No services are planned at this time. Mrs. Fesperman was cremated.
Memorials may be made to Disabled Veterans or St. Jude's Children's Hospital.

Tonabel (Toni) Scott

Tonabel (Toni) Scott, age 89, of Sweetwater, passed away on Monday, May 27, 2013, at Nolan Nursing and Rehab.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 30, 2013 at Fourth and Elm Church of Christ with Mike Crowley and Jerry Riggs officiating. Burial will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

Lela Drury Smalling

Graveside services for Lela Drury Smalling, 96, of Crane, formerly of Stephenville, will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 30, 2013 at Palava Cemetery. Mike Crowley will officiate an interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Smalling died Sunday, May 26, 2013 at Crane Nursing Home in Crane, Texas.
She was born June 30, 1916 in Harmony, Okla. She married Cecil Smalling on April 8, 1939 in Altus, Okla.

WASP arrive in Sweetwater

Sixteen WASP (Women Airforce Service Pilots) arrived in Sweetwater on Saturday for the ninth annual WASP Homecoming at the National WASP WWII Museum in Sweetwater, at Avenger Field.
From 1942 to 1944, Avenger Field in Sweetwater was home to the WASP, a select group of brave and patriotic women who were trained to fly and ferry military aircraft between Air Force bases throughout the United States

Sweetwater comes to life in fictional book

Two West Texas natives are hoping to make a name for themselves in the world of writing, all while using Sweetwater as the backdrop for their most recent book.
Jon L. Brown grew up in Sweetwater during the 1960s and '70s while his father, Mike, served as the District Conservationist at the Soil Conservation Service. While his brothers Jack and Jim graduated from Sweetwater High School, Jon's family moved after his sophomore year to Mount Pleasant, Texas.
