Former Sweetwater police sergeant presented with Purple Heart 36 years after being shot

The 32nd Judicial District Attorney’s Office hosted a reception in honor of law enforcement officers who have served and protected local communities and the state of Texas as part of National Police Week. During the reception, a documentary was presented, but not before a surprise presentation was made.

Authorization given to obtain bids for new police station

The Sweetwater City Commission gave authorization for city staff to go out on bids for the construction of a new police station during their meeting on Tuesday morning.
The architect is very close to finishing the plans; upon their completion, this approval grants permission for the city to begin obtaining bids.
Other bids were discussed during the meeting as well. Approval was given to allow staff to go out for bids to sell five surplus, real properties owned by the city.

Various ordinances presented at city meeting

The Sweetwater City Commission once again took a look at the city ordinance on storage containers during their meeting on Tuesday at City Hall.
Chapter 18 of the Code of Ordinances, entitled "Miscellaneous Provisions and Offenses," dealt with allowing freight and portable storage containers in certain zoning districts. The ordinance was previously passed, but after a request by the commissioners, it was reconsidered by the city to make it more business friendly.

A friendly and familiar face has rejoined the Sweetwater Reporter advertising team. Brenda Morales, Sweetwater native, reprised her advertising executive role in March of 2013. She first brought her advertising expertise to the Sweetwater Reporter from 2002-2003 and then again from 2008-2010.
Morales was born and raised in Sweetwater. She graduated from Sweetwater High School in 2001 and then again from Texas State Technical College in 2007 with a degree in digital imaging and design.

Honk rally sends off Mustangs

The Sweetwater Mustang baseball team was sent off to Lubbock for the Region I-3A quarterfinal best-of-3 series at Lubbock Christian University’s Hays Field on Friday with several schools having a honk rally. The Mustangs lost their first game last night by one run and will play again today at 2 p.m. Check back for scores.

All-district softball team is full of Lady Mustangs

All nine starters on the Sweetwater softball team — which this year won the first playoff game in the program’s 17-year history before losing in the area round — have been honored by receiving all-district recognition in 4-3A.
Five of the starters made the first team — infielders Suede Shirley and Jerren Villa, outfielders Kelsi Crosson and Megan Holsey and pitcher Maty Montgomery — while two were named to the second team and two others earned all-district honorable mention.

LUBBOCK — Speed made the difference in deciding the winner of Friday’s opener between Sweetwater and Andrews in their Region I-3A quarterfinal baseball series at Lubbock Christian University’s Hays Field.

Sweetwater summer sports camp schedule

A Lady Mustang Basketball Camp will be held June 3-6 at the middle school gym on 305 Lamar Street. The camp is for students who have completed grades 2-8.
The camp sessions will be from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $35 which includes a T-shirt. Pre-registration is appreciated.
A concession stand will be available. The camp’s goal is to improve players’ skills through instruction in individual skills and fun team competitions.

Four transported in bus wreck

Four people were transported to Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital on Thursday after three school buses bumped together after school, causing only minor injuries. One bus was disabled as well.
