The Sweetwater High School Class of 2013 graduated on Friday evening, May 31, 2013, at Mustang Bowl with friends and family joining in the celebration. Shown, SHS graduates celebrate after receiving their diplomas.
This summer, the Sweetwater campus of TSTC (Texas State Technical College) West Texas, located at 300 Homer K. Taylor Drive, will be offering Microsoft Office Short Courses starting on June 17 until July 28. All of the courses will be offered in the Graphics Building in Room 107.
By spelling the words 'novillero' (an inexperienced bullfighter) and 'temblor' (an earthquake) correctly, Sweetwater sixth-grader Kara Lehnert advanced past the third round of the National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. this week. Lehnert was one of 11 million students who participated in the 2013 National Spelling Bee, and made it to the final 239. She, and 197 other students, were eliminated after the third round based upon a newly-created computerized vocabulary test. She did not misspell a word since she began the local spelling bee in February.
Many people have recently entered pleas during 32nd Judicial District Court proceedings resulting in fines, probation and jail time.
A Lady Mustang Basketball Camp will be held June 3-6 at the middle school gym on 305 Lamar Street. The camp is for students who have completed grades 2-8. The camp sessions will be from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost of $35 includes a T-shirt. Pre-registration is appreciated.
A concession stand will be available. The campâ€™s goal is to improve playersâ€™ skills through instruction in individual skills and fun team competitions.
These two 2013 Sweetwater High School graduates â€” Amy Witt (left) and Elise Lawrence â€” were named to the Class 3A academic all-state golf team for the 2012-13 school year for excelling not only on the golf course but also in the classroom. The six team members were selected by the Texas Girls Coaches Association.
Nick Nemir (second from left) was given a resolution by the Sweetwater ISD honoring him for qualifying for the state track meet.
He competed in the 300-meter hurdles. Nemir is a 2013 Sweetwater High School graduate.

The Sweetwater Mudcats were the first place team in the Minor League and began play at a District 5 tournament in Snyder on Saturday.
