Former TSTC Chief of Police pleads guilty to felony theft

Former Texas State Technical College (Sweetwater campus) Chief of Police Debrah Kaye McCain pled guilty on Monday in the 32nd Judicial District Court to theft of over $1,500 of a public servant, a third degree felony.
The classification would have been enhanced, had the amount been over $20,000. McCain was accused of taking U.S. currency in the amount of $19,528.03 on April 16, 2009, while she was the Sweetwater TSTC Chief of Police. "The money came into your custody by virtue of your status as a public servant," said Judge Glen Harrison.

TSTC to offer Microsoft Office short courses

As part of the Microsoft Office Short Courses offered this summer at the local TSTC (Texas State Technical College) West Texas campus, two classes on Microsoft Word 2010 will be taught.
The campus is located at 300 Homer K. Taylor Drive in Sweetwater, and the courses will be held in the Graphics Building in Room 107. Each class costs $120.

Stringer pleads guilty to indecency with a child

June 4, 2013

Ethan Charles Stringer pled guilty to indecency with a child by contact, a second degree felony. Stringer engaged in sexual contact with a child under 17 years of age by touching the victim's genitals on March 17, 2012.
The victim, the victim's mother and the victim’s father each gave impact statements at the court proceedings on Monday.

No serious injuries in wreck

A wreck occurred on Interstate 20 on Monday afternoon on the Cemetery Road bridge in the east bound lane in Nolan County.
The truck with the trailer (front) had broken down and was already on the phone with 911 when he was hit from behind by the red pickup, according to emergency authorities. Traffic was reportedly heavy at the time and the driver was not able to see very far ahead of him.
A tractor trailer was unable to avoid the truck that hit the trailer and clipped the back of the Ford truck. The tractor trailer went past the wreck and stopped farther down the interstate.

Arevalo pleads guilty in home invasion case

Alfonso Arevalo of Sweetwater pled guilty to three counts during 32nd Judicial District Court proceedings on Monday.
Arevalo pled guilty to theft under $1,500, enhanced to a state jail felony with two prior theft convictions, both in the Nolan County Court at Law. On April 16, 2012, Arevalo took Budweiser beer from Brenda Roman. For that plea, Arevalo received a sentence of 18 months confinement in the State Jail Division of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. He was also ordered to pay $343 in court costs and $27 in restitution to Skinny's in Sweetwater.

The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce will hold its monthly Chamber Coffee at 10 a.m., Wednesday, June 5 at Sweetwater Healthcare Center, located at 1600 Josephine.
The business is owned by Senior Living Properties, LLC and is operated by the Sweetwater Healthcare Center. Leslie Lane serves as the administrator.

Sweetwater and Roscoe 2013 summer sports camp schedule

A Mustang Golf Camp will be held June 11-13 at Sweetwater Country Club for ages 6 and up. Sessions are from 9-11 a.m. each day. FCA all-star games to feature area athletes, coaches

Eight 2013 graduating high school senior athletes — plus a pair of coaches — from Nolan County will be participating in three Fellowship of Christian Athletes area all-star games this week as they get a final taste of athletic competition before officially ending their high school careers.
Seven of the athletes — Tadeo Canon-Masjoan, Shelby Cason, Kelsi Cros-son, Kendra Crosson, Ryan Linebaugh, Nick Nemir and Suede Shirley — are from Sweetwater as are both coaches, Shane Mobley and Liz Miller. Also participating this week will be Landon Jones of Roscoe.

Ruffin replaces Perkins at Wylie

Former Sweetwater High School athlete Gregg Ruffin was recently named Wylie’s head boys basketball coach following the resignation of Russell Perkins in May.
Ruffin was a three-sport athlete at SHS and in 1991 led the basketball team to its first district title in 29 years. He also starred in football and track and later played college basketball at Hardin-Simmons Universi-ty from 1991-95 before starting his coaching career.
For the past 16 years, he has served as an assistant basketball coach at Wylie as well as an assistant coach in baseball and football.
