Baseball team honored with SISD resolution

The Sweetwater High School baseball team was recently honored with a resolution by the Sweetwater ISD for making the playoffs. Several members of the team were present at last week’s school board meeting and were presented individual resolutions.

Pleas entered in district court

June 25, 2013

Three entered pleas during 32nd Judicial District Court proceedings on Monday.
David Wayne Suddock pleaded guilty to credit card or debit card abuse, a state jail felony. He was sentenced to 18 months confinement in the State Jail Division of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice with 206 days of credit towards his sentence for time already served in jail. He was also ordered to pay a $500 fine, $343 in court costs, $500 in attorney's fees, $82.98 in restitution to First Financial Bank of Sweetwater and $1,500 in restitution to Texas National Bank of Sweetwater.

Cherry named Paul Harris Society member

CĂ©sar Caro presents Rotary Club President Gil Cherry with a Paul Harris Society Member certificate at Monday's Rotary Club meeting.
Membership in the Paul Harris Society is based on a “new money” aggregate gift of $1,000 a year to the annual programs fund of the Rotary Foundation.

Cline Shale public forum is Thursday

Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development (SEED), the sales tax entity that is responsible for Economic Development in Sweetwater, will be hosting a “Cline Shale” public forum for those interested in learning more about the Cline Shale oil play and how it affects West Texas. The public forum will be held on Thursday, June 27, 2013 at 6 p.m. in the “Historic” Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium located at 400 Locust Street in Sweetwater.

Students participate in Mustang Theatre Camp

Mustang Theatre Camp for second through eighth graders kicked off last Thursday at the Sweetwater High School Auditorium and continued on Monday.
Each day of camp starts at 9 a.m. and provides a concentrated experience in the world of theatre production with participation in acting, improvisation, costume building, makeup, backstage crew work, history, dance and performance. Participating campers are given the opportunity to act or work as technical support crew.

Local treatment program for Parkinson’s Disease addressed at June 27 lunch and learn seminar

With more than 50,000 new cases of Parkinson’s disease each year, it has grown to become the 14th leading cause of death in the United States. Although there is no cure for those living with the disease, there are treatment options that can reduce some of its debilitating effects.
On June 27, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) will be hosting a free Lunch and Learn Seminar on the hospital’s new treatment option for those in the region suffering from Parkinson’s disease.

Travis Glasgow, age 64, of Sweetwater, passed away on Sunday, June 23, 2013 at Hendrick Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at First Apostolic Tabernacle with Revs. Larry Baird, David Greg Boone and Michael Bingham officiating. Burial will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

Merle Fitts, 92, died on June 21, 2013, in El Dorado, Ark. while in the care of hospice.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 27, 2013 at Roscoe Cemetery with Father Dennis Bosley officiating. Burial will follow at Roscoe Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home. 

Carolyn Fraley Daniel

Carolyn Fraley Daniel, 70, of Sweetwater, passed away Monday, June 24, 2013, at a local medical center in Abilene. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., on Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at First Baptist Church, 213 E. 3rd Street in Sweetwater, with arrangements being handled by Community Memorial Funeral Home, 1443 North 2nd in Abilene.
