West Texas Center employees drive more than 75,000 miles a month in rural West Texas providing care to more than 3,200 people.
Their superior record of safety earned West Texas Centers the Betty Hardwick Excellence in Risk Management Award presented by the Texas Council Risk Management Fund.
âBetty (Hardwick) had a high passion for good risk management and she would be most proud of (West Texas) center for their accomplishment,â said Greg Womack, Program Executive Texas Council Risk Management Fund.
Two people were transported on Tuesday afternoon after another 18-wheeler wreck at the US 84 bridge that is currently being repaired after being hit last year by an 18-wheeler. The road had seen several wrecks in the past few months. The Sweetwater Fire Department received the initial call for emergency services at 3 p.m. One person was transported by ambulance to Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital and another person was flown to Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.
While the new SNAP building is being built, clients enjoy SNAP activities in the metal building next to the former building, also where the new building will be located. Nolan County Commissioners met Monday morning to discuss several issues involving the courthouse and Nolan County. The commissioners voted on and approved the re-instatement of the burn ban throughout the county, due to recent dry conditions.
Ydalia G. Alcala, age 59, of Sweetwater, passed away on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at her residence.
A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, July 15, 2013 at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel recited by Lupe Medellin.
Holy Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Rev. Charles Okonkwo officiating. Burial will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

Several local churches will be coming together this week in order to reach out to the community.
This year's Sweetwater Outreach Week (SOW) will be held from Thursday, July 11 through Saturday, July 13. The purpose of the event is to offer needed assistance to homeowners by painting their house or mowing their lawn, free of charge.
There are, however, some prerequisites for a home to be considered. The homeowner must own the house (it cannot be a rental property), as well as be physically unable to meet these tasks.
This summer, the Sweetwater campus of TSTC (Texas State Technical College) West Texas, located at 300 Homer K. Taylor Drive, is offering Microsoft Office Short Courses. All of the courses will be offered in the Pevehouse Building in Room 210.
"Whether you currently work in an office environment that just upgraded to Microsoft Office 2010, or just want to learn the latest features of this software, the right kind of training is essential," said course organizers. "At TSTC West Texas, we offer a variety of courses on the latest version of this popular software package."
Sweetwater High School had another great six week period with 65 students making the A-Honor Roll, and Texas National Bank continued with its commitment to recognize and award one lucky scholar from each grade with $50. The winners of the Texas National Bank Good Grades Pay Award for the sixth six seeks were Mikeilah Foust (9th Grade), Corynn Martin (10th Grade), Micaela Reschman (11th Grade) and Sean Morrow (12thGrade).
Several members of next yearâs Highland High School girls basketball team recently attended a Team Camp that was held at Lubbock Christian University.
At the camp, they participated in a tournament where they won eight of their nine games en route to claiming the tournament championship in the Grey Division.
Highland went 5-1 in pool play before taking all three of their games in the championship round.
