The City of Sweetwater business offices will be closed on Monday, Sept. 2 for Labor Day. There will be no residential or commercial refuse collection on that day. The commercial collection on Monday will be picked up Tuesday, Sept. 3. The residential collection will run one day behind schedule. The Citizen's drop-off center and Type IV landfill will also be closed on Monday, Sept. 2 and will resume regularly scheduled hours on Tuesday.
Sweetwater ISD has an early dismissal scheduled for Monday, Sept. 2, 2013. Listed are the dismissal times for each campus: 12:15 p.m. for J.P. Cowen & Southeast Elementary, 12:20 p.m. for East Ridge Elementary, 12:50 p.m. for Sweetwater High School, 12:55 p.m. for Sweetwater Intermediate, and 1 p.m. for Sweetwater Middle School. Employees may leave at 1:10 p.m. if all students have left the campus.
The County-City Library will be closed Saturday, Aug. 31 and Monday, Sept. 2 for the Labor Day holiday.
The First United Methodist Clothes Closet will be open Saturday from 9-11 a.m. Enter through the north fellowship door. Clothes are free to anyone in need. They will also accept clean and gently used clothes.
Sweetwater â€“ The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will begin a major project to reconstruct 1.3 miles of Lamar Street (US Highway 70-Business) in Sweetwater the first week of September.
The project will completely rehabilitate Lamar, which is one of the communityâ€™s major streets, from Interstate 20 to Avenue B by rebuilding the road base, laying new asphalt and building concrete intersections to improve drainage. The project also includes new sidewalks, curbs, gutters, retaining walls and upgraded signals.

Lamar Street Baptist Church is pleased to announce their new pastor, Clay Jacobson.
Clay earned his Bachelor's of Art in History from Texas A&M University and his Master of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He will begin fulfilling his pastoral duties starting this Sunday, Sept. 1.
Clay is joined by his wife Melissa, their daughter Ella, and a cat named Chewy.
Although Clay is an Aggie, his wife is a fan of Texas Tech, and they both are fans of the Dallas Cowboys. The Jacobson family is moving to Sweetwater from Roscoe.
Dove Hunting season officially kicks off this Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013. The season is open until Oct. 23, 2013, and runs again from Dec. 20, 2013 to Jan. 5, 2014. Nolan County Game Warden Jake Simmering would like to remind all hunters young and old, inexperienced and veteran, to be sure all guidelines and regulations are followed during this hunting season. Hunters can pick up the Outdoor Annual (free of charge) anywhere hunting and fishing licenses are sold â€” Higginbotham, Wal-Mart and The Medicine Place are places in Sweetwater as well as online at tpwd.state.tx.us.
If you're looking for something fun to do in town this Labor Day weekend, the Holy Spirit Parish Festival â€” better known as the Jamaica â€” might be the ticket.
The event will be from noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 1, at 511 W. Alabama in Sweetwater.
Ruby Whitman Davis, age 97, of Carlsbad, NM, passed away on Aug. 28, 2013 at Lakeview Christian Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 31, at First United Methodist Church, 207 West Hagerman Street in Carlsbad with Rev. James Baker officiating. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. at Shady Pine Masonic Cemetery in Hagerman, NM.Â Visitation will be from 1-8 p.m. Friday at West Funeral Home in Carlsbad.
