Sweetwater ISD new school ratings released

On Thursday, the accountability ratings for schools was released by the TEA (Texas Education Agency). This year is the first year for the new system, which measures four main aspects: student achievement, student progress, closing performance gaps and postsecondary readiness.
Sweetwater ISD (Independent School District), along with all of the district schools, obtained the "Met Standard" accountability rating, which is the highest of the two rankings within the new system, according to Sweetwater ISD Superintendent Terry Pittman.

Cleckler named SMS, Secondary Teacher of the Year

The recipient of the SMS (Sweetwater Middle School) Teacher of the Year for 2012-2013 was Shaunna Cleckler. She was also named the SISD (Sweetwater Independent School District) Secondary Teacher of the Year for the past school year.
Cleckler is a sixth grade Social Studies and G/T (Gifted and Talented) teacher. Out of the 25 years that she has been teaching, all but four of them have been spent at SISD.
Cleckler earned her degree in Elementary Education as a reading specialist from Abilene Christian University. She is also a member of the TCTA (Texas Classroom Teachers Association).

Noreen Carson to minister at Aglow International Sweetwater Community Lighthouse meeting

The Sweetwater Aglow team would like to invite you to our August meeting at the Holiday Inn Express on Tuesday, Aug. 13, at 7 p.m. Ministering will be Noreen Carson. As a psalmist, worship leader and teacher, Noreen has touched the lives of many with an anointing peace that has brought physical and emotional healing and deliverances. She began her journey with the Holy Spirit at the age of 15.

SISD reserved season football tickets now on sale

Reserved season football tickets for the 2013 season will be up for renewal to current option holders beginning Thursday, August 8 through Friday, August 30.
Tickets may be purchased at the Sweetwater ISD Administration office. Tickets are $30 for five home games.
Reserved ticket sales for the general public will go on sale on Monday, Sept. 2 The last day to purchase season tickets will be Friday, Sept. 13. Tickets will be sold during regular business hours.

BCMRC provides training opportunity for public

Verbal Judo! This month the Big Country Medical Reserve Corps will offer training conducted by Scott Davis, USAF Retired. Verbal Judo is a way of using words as a way to maintain mental and emotional safety. This kind of “conflict management” involves using posture and body language, tone of voice and choice of words as a means for calming a potentially volatile situation before it can manifest into physical violence.

Highland Heights UMC donates school supplies to East Ridge

Highland Heights United Methodist Church recently consecrated a collection of school supplies for needy students in the second and third grades at the Sweetwater East Ridge Elementary campus. The school outreach ministry is one of several ministries that the church sponsors throughout the year.

Wal-Mart supports SISD with school supply event this weekend

Wal-Mart is supporting Sweetwater Independent School District in a unique way this weekend.
Friday through Sunday, they have asked for a Sweetwater ISD bus to be parked in front of Wal-Mart. They are adding a banner that says Fill the Bus for Our Kids. 
They are encouraging people to buy school supplies and leave them on the bus for students at Sweetwater ISD. The supplies will be donated to each campus.

Family’s home destroyed by high winds

August 9, 2013

Last night’s thunderstorm in Sweetwater produced high winds that caused the destruction of a Sweetwater family’s home after the winds blew down their trailer on the corner of Coke and Louisiana.
Three people lived in the house but were not home at the time and no injuries were reported. William Lybarger says that his family has lived in the home for 10 years.
The trailer home was paid off, but the family had no insurance on the home. The family’s neighbors hope to set up a benefit bank account for the family.

Expect mostly sunny skies today with a high near 97. Winds will be from the west at 5 to 10 mph, becoming north-northeastern in the afternoon.
After 1 p.m., we'll have a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms, which will last through 1 a.m. Otherwise, we'll see partly cloudy conditions with a low around 73. Winds will be from the east-northeast from 5 to 10 mph.
This weekend, expect highs in the mid to upper 90s with lows in the mid 70s. Winds will vary throughout the weekend but will reach up to 15 mph.

Local cheerleaders bring home awards

August 8, 2013

Sweetwater High School and Sweetwater Middle School cheerleaders recently attended Universal Cheerleading Association camp in San Angelo.  
The SHS cheerleaders won many blue superior ribbons in dance and cheer. SHS was named camp champions in the varsity division in cheer, game day preparation and fight song.
"The SHS cheerleaders worked extremely hard and are ready for football season," said Kassidi Seaton, cheer sponsor. "Big Red, Katie Fox, attended camp with the cheerleaders and learned many new skits and techniques."
