Class reunions planned Homecoming weekend

Many classes of Sweetwater High School have planned reunions for Homecoming weekend in Sweetwater, Sept. 20-22.
The Class of 1968 is celebrating their 45th reunion and hosting the All Class Reunion during Homecoming on Sept. 20.
The event will kick off at 2 p.m. with the Exes Tea at Sweetwater High School and ends with a reception which runs from 6 p.m. to midnight at the Texas Theatre, hosted by Randy and Jolanda Hendricks.
Admission to the reception is free and is BYOB.

Police station bids open at city meeting

Bids were opened for the construction of the new police station during Tuesday's Sweetwater City Commission meeting.
While seven bids were received, one bid was disqualified due to the fact that the company had no representation at a mandatory pre-bid meeting.
The remaining six bids were then briefly discussed, with the base bid cost noted and how long the work would take. Also mentioned were the costs of alternates, additions, deduction costs and costs of concrete.

Leadership Sweetwater kicks off for the year

The Leadership Sweetwater class of 2013-2014 gathered for their first day this week at the Texas State Technical College Center.

City discusses property annexation

The Sweetwater City Commission took action on Tuesday to begin the lengthy process of annexation for several properties located in the extraterritorial jurisdiction of the city.
For the first two portions, a development agreement was offered in accordance to section 43.035 of the Texas Local Government Code, due to the fact that they had been appraised for tax purposes as land for agriculture or wildlife management (subchapter C or D in Chapter 23 of the Tax Code), or as timber land (subchapter E).

Local FFA student awarded scholarship

This past weekend, Sweetwater High School student Larissa Locklar exhibited her show lambs at the Permian Basin Fair in Odessa.
She was awarded a $1,500 Market Lamb scholarship for her FFA and academic achievements.

West Nile Virus case reported in Mitchell County resident

This year’s first confirmed case of West Nile illness in Mitchell County has been reported. The Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department is urging people to take precautions to reduce the risk of contracting West Nile virus, a mosquito-borne illness.
West Nile illness was confirmed in an adult male who remains hospitalized with the neuroinvasive form of the disease. Additional details about the patient are not being released to protect the patient’s identity.

Heart Walk is Saturday

The 2013 Sweetwater Heart Walk is scheduled to take place tomorrow, Sept. 14 at the Sweetwater Mustang track field. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., with the walk starting at 9 a.m.
The local Heart Walk has been taking place for over 20 years and is a fundraising initiative which supports the American Heart Association (AHA). Two years ago, the walk was changed from its spring schedule to become a fall venue, according to event coordinator Jerrie Gee.

Truck carrying propane wrecks in Nolan County

An 18-wheeler carrying propane tanks wrecked in Nolan County near Blackland Road on Friday morning.
After close inspection by first responders from the Sweetwater Fire Department, it was determined that although some of the tanks were damaged, none were ruptured or leaking and no threats were apparent.
The trailer split after the truck hit a telephone pole and the driver walked away from the wreck with no injuries.

City tax rate, budget for 2013-14 adopted

The 2013-2014 tax rate and budget for the City of Sweetwater were adopted during Tuesday morning's city commission meeting.
Approval was given for the second and final reading of the ordinance fixing and levying the tax rate of 48 cents per $100 valuation. Since this year's proposed tax rate did not exceed the effective tax rate, a motion to adopt the ordinance did not require the language about "tax increase," as stated in 26.05 (b) of the Property Tax Code.
