ANDREWS — When the Mustangs battle each other on the football field, it’s rarely a dull contest.
Sweetwater and Andrews, who have played memorable games since they first met as district rivals in the 1980s, produced a non-district classic on Friday. When the dust had settled, the visiting Mustangs (Sweetwater) had a 39-31 win after holding off a fourth-quarter rally by the host Mustangs (Andrews), leaving both teams with identical 1-1 records.
It was a shootout from the start, complete with several huge momentum shifts on both sides.
Sweetwater went 2-for-2 in sub-varsity football ac-tion vs. Andrews Thursday at Mustang Bowl.
Sweetwater’s JV (1-1) beat Andrews 28-24. Adrian Vizzerra had two rushing touchdowns and Denzell Moore one, while J’Corey Amos (5 catches, 53 yards) scored on a pass reception. Deshaun Williams (three catches, 91 yards), Mike Lawrence (six catches, 74 yards) and Sean Norman (5, 63) were also top receivers. Defensive standouts were Vizzerra (six tackles), Moore (five tackles), Amos (three tackles) and Max Gomez (interception).
Sweetwater’s freshman improved to 2-0 with a 36-14 win over Andrews.
ROSCOE — Roscoe’s of-fense exploded for 39 first-half points in Friday’s home opener en route to a 45-26 victory over Irion County.
The Plowboys, who ex-ceeded 21 points only one time last season, reached that plateau in the first minute of the second quarter in evening its record at 1-1.
Blackwell is now 2-0 after a win at Jayton on Friday, but Highland (0-2) lost its game at Sterling City.
Blackwell 32, Jayton 14
Blackwell avenged a 2012 non-district loss to Jayton as the Hornets got three touchdowns from Jayden Jones and one each from Franck Cano and Mason Magness. Jayton (1-1) won last year’s game 56-30, but was mostly shut down by Blackwell’s defense in Fri-day’s rematch.
Roscoe’s junior varsity football team defeated Irion County, 30-8, in Irion County on Thursday for its second win in as many games this season.
Brayden Beal accounted for all four touchdowns by the Plowboys. He had scor-ing runs of 62 and 61 yards for Roscoe’s first two touchdowns, threw a 4-yard TD pass to Isaiah Gonzales in the third quarter and even scored defensively with an 80-yard interception return in the third stanza.
