Roscoe, Blackwell, Highland take wins

Nolan County’s three high school football teams outside Sweetwater all came up with impressive wins Friday. Roscoe romped past Baird in its District 7-1A, Division II opener, while Blackwell beat a good Blanket squad on the road to remain undefeated and Highland picked up its second straight vict-ory by routing Trent.

ROSCOE — Roscoe also celebrated its homecoming in addition to the 41-point win, which evens the Plow-boys’ season record at 2-2.

Roscoe JV wins

Roscoe’s junior varsi-ty routed Cross Plains’ JV, 38-0, on Thursday.
After a scoreless first quarter, Roscoe (3-1) took a 16-0 lead into the half on two TD passes by Brayden Beal. Beal threw a 2-yard strike to Isaiah Gonzales for the first score and a 17-yard pass to Braiden Moore for the second, and Juan Sanchez ran over a pair of 2-point conversions.

Sweetwater to celebrate Sweetest Day with concert

Although not yet widely celebrated in this part of the country, a group of Sweetwater residents hope to make it a community tradition to celebrate the unofficial holiday, Sweetest Day. A benefit concert featuring three up-and-coming female artists at the Municipal Auditorium will be the main event for that day in Sweetwater.
Sweetest Day is celebrated on the third Saturday of October, mostly in the northeastern part and Great Lakes region of the United States, having started in Cleveland, Ohio in 1922. This year that day will be Oct. 19.

Sweetwater to host first Shale Show

Sweetwater will be the focus of the nation’s oil and gas industry this week as the first Shale Show 2013 will be held Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 1-2 at the Nolan County Coliseum in Sweetwater’s Newman Park.
More than 150 exhibitors from all across the United States will have displays set up both inside and outside the Nolan County Coliseum Complex, according to Greg Wortham, Sweetwater mayor and executive director of the Cline Shale Oil Alliance, which is sponsoring the event.

Andrews named EVP of Chamber

The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce has announced its new Executive Vice President and director Leah Andrews. She has been working with the Chamber for four years, in accounting and as a volunteer for many of their programs.
Andrews is a 1990 graduate of Abilene Christian University, a C.P.A., who has a heart for civic leadership and servant opportunity.

Community updates given at forward planning meeting

Various community leaders gave updates on their respective organizations during the fall meeting of the Nolan County Forward Planning committee.
The meeting, held on Wednesday at the Sweetwater Country Club, was hosted by SEED (Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development) and gave the participants a chance to learn about the ongoing activity from the Cline Shale oil development.
Roscoe Collegiate Independent School District (RCISD): Dr. Kim Alexander, the superintendent of RCISD, discussed how the district is taking part in a new method of learning.

Permian Basin Petroleum Association (PBPA) hosts informational luncheon

The Permian Basin Petroleum Association (PBPA) held their monthly informational luncheon on Thursday, Sept. 19 at the Petroleum Club in Midland. Mr. Jeffery Tillery, Director of Research for Tudor, Pickering, Holt & Company, gave an overview of the oil and gas industry. He projected that by 2020, the Permian Basin and the Eagle Ford could reach 4.5 million barrels of oil per day which would be approximately one-third of the total global crude supply. Mr.

Texas State Technical College West Texas will host a Sweetwater Area College Fair on Monday from 1-2:30 p.m. at the Student Center Gym on the Sweetwater campus. This event is open to all area high school students, counselors and parents. This event is co-sponsored by Sweetwater High School and sanctioned by the Texas Association of Collegiate Registrar’s and Admissions Officers.
Students, parents and counselors will have the opportunity to visit with representatives from more than 30 colleges, universities and armed forces.
